Finally got a laptop! nice machine has a DVD-+RW DL burner. My old burning progs don't work with the new hardware/software.

Other than Nero (which I really don't like) what is a good general purpose burning prog. Is the newer roxio any good? the new recordnow max?
I'm open to any suggestions.

DVD DL support would be nice too, but I'm currently reading the threads about this and don't mind using other progs just for DVD/DVD DL.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Thanks for the reply. I read that thread before posting.

I don't mind paying for a prog. I just haven't had cause for a new 1 in years and want something as good as I had.

Of course freeware is fine provided it can do just as good a job and is not too cumbersome to use.

CDburnerXP pro looks OK but isn't compatible with my drive.

Well if you don't mind paying, there is one app., of several that I use to burn with, depending on what I am compling, and that is CloneDVD2 located Here. (http://www.slysoft.com/en/)

I use it to burn my DVD Rebuilder Pro. files most of the time.

You just click the "Write existing Data" tab, then pick your source and speed then burn away. I have had no problems with it.

This all just my opinion of course, but at least the link I provided will give you a chance to use the app. for a free trial period, to find out for yourself what works for you.

Also, if you give more info on your setup you may get more input.

More info in= More info out.

P.S. I don't use the transcoding part.

PgcEdit can also burn single and double layer DVD-Videos.
When burning DL DVDs, you can select the layer break position, with preview! And the burned DL DVD just... works!
PgcEdit uses mkisofs and DVD Decrypter to generate and burn an ISO, and optionally Daemon Tools to mount the ISO. All these tools are free.

Thanks for all the help

I've got an HP Z(something)6000
the burner is a Hitachi-LG HT-DT-ST GVC-4080N (or something like that)
The included software I find to be awful. It is Sonic digital media studio.

I prefer old style gray box straight forward apps. I hate some of these cheesy skinned I-will-guide-you-like-an-idiot new apps.

Quality over speed is important to me. I used RecordnowMax 4 for DVD and Roxio 5 plat for audio. Data was whichever app icon I saw 1st. (don't ask why I didn't use recordnow for everything, just weird habits of mine)

I have only recently tried out PGCedit, but it looks like a great app and will probably become one of my main progs for DVD. I've used DVDdycrypter & IMGtool classic as an experiment with great results. It seems like for DVD there are good options, even free ones.

I was just hoping that there might be a classic type app that can handle data, audio, and MP3 encoding. However, I see that with my preferences, I may have to use an external MP3 enc and be forced to use nasty Sonic for burning data & audio.
