Hey guys, I hope this is the right forum for this type of question. I was browsing around Mr Bass's website and came across dvd2dvd software, a program that looks very similar to the old dvd2svcd I used three years ago when I was into making cd-r backups of my dvds. Well, times have changed and I now have a new NEC dvd burner and plan on making 1:1 dvd backups to dvd-r discs. My only question about dvd2dvd, is what is the advantage to using a program that requires a $58 basic version of CCE when I can copy the dvds for free using dvd shrink + dvd decrypter? Any info is great, thanks.

This question's in the wrong area; DVD2SVCD has its own disscussion thread.

Which brings me to the answer to your question! DVD2DVD IS DVD2SVCD. It just now has the option for re-encoding a DVD's main movie at DVD resolution and an adjusted target size for a +-R disk. The advantage of using an encoder-based application is that many times an encoder yeilds better quality over a transcoder like DVD Shrink. If you still want a "free" package, you might do well to check out the DVD Rebuilder thread -- Rebuilder has numerous options which include the use of free encoders like HC.

But if you're happy with DVD Shrink, stay with 'er. So long as you end your day with a smile on your face, you've had a good day! :p

I see, looks like I'll stick with DVD shrink then. I remember the insane CCE 2 pass 3 pass whatever taking wayyy too long. Thanks for the help.

Anytime. By the way, DVD2SVCD now has a plugin that allows for a one-pass VBR encode. This method takes samples of your movie, runs test encodes on them, and simply selects the lowest Q value that will work and keep your filesize within the +-R limit. Keeps your quality high without taking up your entire day waiting for an encode. More information can be found at the link below:
