View Full Version : Doom9 a la Wordpress

Over the last few weeks I've been investigating a rewrite of the Doom9 site to make it more, well, useful to the modern surfer. This includes adding RSS feeds, making it easier to switch between site layouts and making the site more accessable. At the same time, I've heard Doom9 say before that the current site code isn't very maintainable.

So I've rewritten the site to work as a blog, running on WordPress (http://www.wordpress.org). Standards-compliant XHTML and CSS, integrated RSS feeds, and all the static content can be added in too.

And no frames! *grin*

Current demo is at http://thumper.kicks-ass.org/wordpress - Yes, I know it doesn't look right in Internet Explorer at the moment. Blame Microsoft and a lakc of spare time on my behalf. I assume this is fixable.

Current issues:

1. Not all content has been migrated over, to say the least. Some of the sidebar links will work - the guides won't. Other language links go to other pages, although hopefully they could be incorporated into the new layout in a much cleverer way than they are currently.

2. The Quick Links listbox doesn't work. I haven't had a look at it yet, so it's a dummy.

3. Only the last month's news content is there. The search works great, but obviously this needs to be further refined.

4. Basic spit and polish. I've tried to keep the basic site layout as close to the original (on Firefox) as possible as a proof of concept, but the new backend makes it an absolute piece of cake to change the whole site layout (or just the CSS) if needed.

PS note that this is completely unofficial. I've mailed doom9 for comments, but for the time being this is my baby. The copyright message at the bottom still applies, and I'm a very naughty boy for breaking it. please don't link this to third parties.

It goes down regularly. The benefits of hosting one's server on a box in one's bedroom.

The basic layout is now largely complete. I'm going to work on importing content and fixing a few minor issues for a while. Any help with making it look reasonable on Internet Explorer is greatly appreciated.
