View Full Version : Rules for flagging threads as read

I'm finding that whether threads are flagged as bold (read) or not seems to be quite erratic... sometimes I can look at posts two or three times before the bold disappears (with no indication that editing of the post has occurred); it also seems that it might depend on whether the thread is accessed through user CP or the forum directly. Also I find my own posts are marked as unread, although this might be intentional. Is it just a quirk of my browser/caching setup or do people find this more generally?

Brilliant. It's not a major issue, but it can be a bit disconcerting.

I did try adding myself to my own ignore list, but it wouldn't let me ... ;)

I doubt anything will happen before the upgrade to vbb 3.5. vbb 3.5 will have its own database based mark as read (finally, we'd offered them that functionality back in the vbb2 days for free but they didn't want it), and enough time was spent porting that hack to vbb 3.0x. vbb 3.5 will have a completely different system for hacks.. they will finally be independent of the main board code, allowing us to upgrade to new vbb releases without having to worry about porting hacks. So, all the time spent now before that happens is basically wasted time as every hack will have to undergo a major rewrite for vbb 3.5.

not to second gues you doom
but why are you using vbb anyways?
phpbb2 is way beter from all the forum adims I know, execpt teske, but he's making his own forum code so he's kinda out of that circle, the main reason I got from from admin friends not switching over was because of the trouble of saving all the user info and such
oh well, I'm jsut currious to hear another opion that all

@Doom9 -- It's not a problem. Thank you for the reply.

phpbb2 is way beter from all the forum adimsYeah right... security problems anyone? My two co-admins and I have better things to do than constantly patch the board and find it hacked once a month. And better for admins? I have run phpbb2 boards and they don't stand a chance against vbb.

intersting, I know one other forum admin who was sort of on the fence about it, your the first one completly agaist it, I guess this is most, "professional" forum comapred to the others i've asked

your the first one completly agaist it,You're obviously not asking the right people. The security flaws in PHPBB2 have been widely published, so has the worm that attacked phpbb2 boards earlier this year (many tried on this board too but vbb isn't vulnerable).

And obviously there's a considerable difference in price. You may not consider a 150 bucks board, but given a certain size and importance in the landscape, I tend to think no admin can afford phpbb2. I know many that have moved (e.g. German Doom9, the largest mirror, or the Turkish one). The majority of the mirrors still use phpbb but the main reason for this is the price. These days, upgrading is not really a problem, we were initially on a fully proprietary board and jelsoft basically imported all old posts so I don't regret paying the intial, or yearly update fees at all.

hmm, well as long as you have a goor coder<like teske and swede> keeping phpbb safe isn't that hard, but I'll quote teske for this
"if you want to have the best board for yourself, make it yourself, so Lina drafted me"

and he is making it, and we've so far had no problems with security, but yeah, I guess the 150 is bit of a push, considering most of the admins I've asked either are good coders, or run small-medium sized forums, this is probely the largest I'm on right now
