My player toshiba sd210 supports xsvcd format.
res: 720x576 (pal) bitrate: ca 3500

Does anybody has experience with such kind of xsvcd's.
Are lower resolutions better ? (e.g. 640x480)
What's about the bitrate ?

Is there a drawback in encoding with this higher resolution ?
How is the comparison in picture quality: xsvcd <=> svcd (480*576) ?

thanks for help

You can measure quality by bps per block.

Example for XSVCD:
720x480 = 8.160 blocks
Bitrate: 3.060 kbps Video, 160 Audio to fit on 80min-CD-R (34min movie)
Quality: 375 bps per block

Example for SVCD:
480x480 = 5.400 blocks
Bitrate: 2.030 kbps Video, 160 Audio to fit on 80min-CD-R (50min movie)
Quality: 376 bps per block

Result:
For XSVCD you need much higher bitrates to get equal quality.
But then you get much sharper picture because of higher resolution.

Try FitCD !

Thanks for your reply
I looked into FitCD.
Amazing programm !!!
Some questions:
What min. quality bps per block would you recommend for XSVCD and for SVCD?
What happens in the video , if the bps per block are very low.
(e.g. 100) ?

Hi
to get the firmware version of the sd210e you must
press <ZOOM> 6 0 6 <ZOOM> on your remote control.

I don't know, if it's possible to upgrade the firmware via cd
or dvd. Maybe you have to send the dvd-player to toshiba service.

Does anybody know it ?

In fact firmware is only upgradable by return to toshiba service.
(as far as i know)

I have firmware 1.4/1.6R2, and have the famous lip-sync problem
with svcds .. what firmware do you guys have? and what problems
do you enconter ?
Some people say taht with older (and ) newer firmwares the lip-sync
problem is not present....

Bootrom version : v1.400
Mainrom version : v2.100-r2

voilą.

I do not have any synch problems. I have been encoding before I got my player and all my svcds are working fine [except I can not view the subs ---DARN---]
It exists a code to make the drive multiregion (I'am sure of it). Would you happen to know it ? or would anyone out there happen to know it ?

Best regards
PS : What are the prices of DVD-R and DVD-RW in the US ?
It is still outrageous in europe

Of course you want SVCD. XVCD does not support fields (It's really just ramped up VCD). You'll get jerky motion on film or ghosting, depending upon how you do it).

There is really no question whatsoever in my mind.

@24hourloop:
The question was not XVCD or SVCD, but XSVCD or SVCD (XSVCD being an SVCD with higher resolution and/or bitrate).

Hi
Now I use exclusively the XSVCD format, because it gets
the best (dvd) quality for me.
I use Fitcd to crop the black areas, which my tv-set does not show.

My settings for avisynth:
BilinearResize(672,542,56,48,608,480)
AddBorders(16,17,16,17)
That means a resolution of: 704x576 (for pal)

For bitrate i use vbr: 300 - 4400 with q=30 in cce.
That means: complex movies take more bitrate (max 3 cd's) than
simple ones (2 cds)

with these settings i get dvd quality .

Hi cherp
No.
Until now I've not managed to get subtitles working with my sd210.

Tip: Please test one of the svcd-samples (images) available at:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/svcd.htm
Then you know exactly, if your firmware supports subtitels or not.
My firmware 1.3-1.4 does not !!!

Mine doesn't in SVCD's but I'am going to test that image
Thanks
