Too many subs

Okay, please bear with me...

I've been trying to use DVD Decrypter and DVDShrink to back up a DVD that's mostly in English, but has segments in other languages too. Normally, subtitles appear only during the non-English scenes. That's how I'd like to make the backup.

Unfortunately, backing up the whole DVD would require almost 50% compression. When I try re-authoring only the main movie (an acceptable 74%), I get a version whose only choices are subs all the time, or not at all.

Is there a way to re-author the original way, with subs only during non-English scenes? (I'm willing to try other tools.)

I understand from your post that you would like to delete (or not display) a bunch of the subtitle lines in a certain subtitle stream in your main movie?
