View Full Version : Layer Break

There still seems to be a pause introduced by leaving in the Layer Break indicator (or whatever it is that IfoEdit recognizes as a Layer Break) in the processed output - I just used DVD-RB Pro 1.0 RC2 to shrink Million Dollar Baby - the burnt output disc still generates a pause on playback on my Sony standalone DVD player (at the beginning of Chapter 22 if memory serves)

however, if I further run the processed output files through DVD-Shrink, IfoEdit doesn't show the Layer Break any more and the subsequently burnt disc plays without a pause - is there something that can be done to integrate this function into DVD-RB in the rebuilding phase to save this otherwise unnecessary post-processing with another piece of software?

just wondering if any more thought had been given to this "condition"

I know it's not a real layer break (since the final target disc is physically single-layered), but it does exhibit a real "layer-break" pause on at least some players

thanks again for a very good product

Everything I ran through DVD-RB, It doesn't remove the layer break... I remember jdobbs saying its not certainly removed unless its known for sure. But every single disc I've done...still none the less good work.

I have no technical qualms with what DVD-RB produces, and I don't know enough about why or why not it chooses to remove the LB "code" that is flagged in something like IFOEdit

but from an aesthetic point of view, I'd rather watch a copied disc with no pause at an artificial layer break (as indeed I know my Sony player introduces when this code is found) - and I've seen that going through the extra step of DVD-Shrink afterwards removes it without any obvious side-effects

just an observation that I was wondering about - jdobbs can you shed any light on this???

DVD-RB is a damn fine and invaluable tool, and it's the best money I've ever spent on software...

I have yet to run into this problem with my copies. Come to think about it -- on my main set top player, which is a Sony DVP-NS575P -- I don't think even studio disks do this. Must depend on the player...

The reason the timing discontinuity flag (what most people think of as layer-break) gets set for a (true) layer break is so the player can adjust and not "pause" during playback -- if it does it anyway that's just a sign of poor coding in the player's firmware.

I'd be happy if someone out there could give me a better algorithm for deciding whether a discontinuity is there for the layer-break.... but so far there haven't been any takers. I'll try to get more creative in the removal.

Has anyone looked at the SCR on other packages that do layer-break removal? Do they remove the discontinuity and then still allow the SCR to restart at 0 (as is often the case in a layer-break), or do they adjust the SCR from there on in so it doesn't restart? I try not to modify the source structure any more than I have to, so I make sure I leave the discontinuity flag in when the SCR starts over.
