Add subtitles to SVCD

After much searching of guides and forums, I can find no simple way of adding
subtitles to an existing SVCD (2 disk)
I do not have access to the DVD source I only have the SVCD disks and wish
to add permanent subtitles. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Adding permanent subtitles means to make them part of the picture. Every change in the picture appearance means re-encoding. So, no there is no simple way.
Instead you can try to make them selectable, if your player support this (some older players don't). The way is ssa -> MaestroSBT->Winsubmux and VCDEasy to author and burn. No re-encoding necessary.
