View Full Version : Display rules when posting new thread

I have often seen that rule #6 and rule #9 are the most often broken rules in here. So why not display those 2 rules prominently in the space above the Title of the thread whenever a user clicks on the 'New Thread' button to open a new thread? This should help mitigate the issue a bit I feel.

Like this:

I have seen this in some other boards running vBulletin, so I know this is possible. Forgot which boards though, but if needed I can go fishing for them.

Thanks

Sounds like a good idea to me, even if this makes the board look more restrictive than it is ;-)

And OT:

"gone phishing" as status comes to my mind while reading your post. It's weird that the negative impact of "phishing" makes it all through to the harmless word "fishing"... :)

I don't know how was created phishing word, but in both phishing and fishing they make "the fish" to bite the hook.

I think what makes the board look more restrictive is when the MoDs have to reiterate the rules in every other thread and end up looking like martinets. This way, some of their work is cut out.:)

How about a "pop-up" that appears when your mouse hovers over the "Submit Reply" button?

Something like this: -

Sounds nice, but how many people actually let their mouse hover over the 'Submit Reply' button? In my case, I don't even use that button - I press ALT+S.

Add a checkbox "I read and accept the rules"

Then if they post any opposite at rules what?

Add a checkbox "I read and accept the rules"
Again, that requires them to sit and read ALL the rules, right?

They are striked.
If they check that by mistake? Even veteran users can make that simple mistake!

a checkbox will nothing but make all our lives harder.. plus there's two posting modes you need to think about.. quick reply and the full blown reply window.

When people sign up, they get a copy of the rules.. what makes you think that if they don't read them then, they'll bother when posting?

They read only once (like they should have done before posting).

they have 2 click to do before posting. If he make a mistake, it's his own fault. In the worst case, he can edit his post back.

In my experience in administrating and moderating many forums, I have seen that rules are more adhered to when repeatedly shown on the user's face. Your call, though..My suggestion can't hurt, I feel - we will still have to deal with a few very blind lawbreakers, but the casual careless user can be disciplined.

yeha I did a quick glance and how I can't find them anymore, I'd love to know what rule 9 is, IIRC 6 is "the best" one, but I'm not sure anymore, it;s been a while since I signed up, but my guess is the rules are porbly stored in the safest place possilbe, right in the open

Actually this could be a little worrying.

If you have missed the "forum rules" link, I wonder how many other forum members are doing the same too!

A while ago I suggested moving the link to here: -

It might need a balloon notice as well
