Will either of these boxes play: DivX, Xvid, NeroDigital or any other format?

Xbox 360 will function as media center extender and will thus play content stored on media center pc's. It could also support other upnp compliant server programs such as Nero though the main idea behind upnp is that the server shell convert programmes to a format supported by the device (e.g. mpeg-2 or wmv in case of xbox 360).
Nobody knows about ps3 but at least it will play bluray which should make it possible to author and burn avc movies using a pc with bluray-r drive.

That will definately be a big + for the blu ray camp (assuming ps3 maintains the lead ps2 already has on the market.) Sony definately using its gaming leverage to push its technologies (bluray-ps3 / umd-psp )

On the other hand, Microsoft has stated that they will an updated version of Xbox 360 after next-gen dvd format wars are over.

They did? Really? Heh.. that would sure be a bad marketing move if true. Seriously, who would want to buy a console knowing it would be obsolete in a couple of months? It's not like it'll only take a simple software upgrade to switch between Blu-ray and HD.

It'll take at least a year or two before the format wars are over. And the games will run on older systems too so it doesn't render first generation units obsolete.
