Have you installed an MP3 codec rather than just trying to use the one that's already there in windows?

I had to change my regfile at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\msacm.l3acm
to be L3codecp.acm

lame mp3 is a good free codec that supports a wide range of settings

Agreed. It is way better than what Fraunhofer could bundle with Windows. And it's free too!
