Today I tried capturing from my DV cameria via Premiere 6.5, which I've always perfectly done. But suddenly Premiere is crashing ever time I go to Capture Movie, and turn on the camera. If the camera is off, then it doesn't crash until I turn it on.
I also noticed then that Windows Media Player (both 6.4 and 9.0) crashes when I attempt to open an already captured DV .avi file. Media Player classic still works however.
I figure my DV codec must be messed up for some reason. How can I reinstall the Microsoft DV compressor?

If you really believe that the MS DV codec is corrupted then you can force the reinstallation of it by entering safe mode and deleting the MS DV codec files. The MS DV codec files are qdv.dll and qcap.dll There are sometimes 2 or 3 copies of them in various folders. It might be a good idea to note their location and back them up to floppy. After you delete them, restart in normal mode and then reinstall DirectX. This time the files will be replaced since windows will report them missing. If you reinstall DirectX without deleting them, it might not replace files.
This could also indicate other problems and have nothing to do with DirectX. Perhaps reinstall you video card drivers. There might be an issue with hardware overlay. MPC works because it might be using a VFW DV codec and not the MS DirectX DV filter.
If that doesn't work, a reinstallation of windows might be needed.

1. Reinstall latest DirectX
or
2. Register the original DLL manually:
The file is "C:\Windows\System32\qdv.dll".
Locate it in windows explorer.
Open Start->Run dialog, type "regsvr32" without quotes
then drag the qdv.dll file into the run dialog.
the line in Run dialog should now read: regsvr32
C:\Windows\System32\qdv.dll
Press Enter
Hope this helps.
