What are the steps and software to use to convert high definition TV captured as mpeg to XVid?

How do you edit the captured mpeg?

How do you convert HD mpeg to XVid and retain the wide screen format?

If it's in the .mpg file container I reccommend opening it with VirtualDubMod and then either encoding it directly to Xvid, or frameserving to another encoder. You could also try framserving the MPG to VirtualDub with AVISynth.
