Current system
1GB RAM
P4 3ghz
XP MCE 2005 SP2
Nero Ultra filters
GF6800GT
Currently AVC encoded HDTV content (720p) plays ok in zoom player with 70-80% CPU usuage. With the overhead of MCE2005, you get good playback, until you spool from the HD, then the audio/vdeio go out of sync and there is stuttering. Clearly I need a 2x faster CPU (or NVrapIA promised h.264 support).
Any suggestions? FFDshow seems much slower.

Your solution is
Clearly I need a 2x faster CPU (or NVrapIA promised h.264 support).
Maybe you want to try vlc or mplayer. But if you experienced ffdshow to be slower already, I doubt it will help much. Atm, there is no other solution that I know of than to either encode at lower res or buy a faster computer.

I have 512mb ram, 2.2GHz athlon64.
when you say you have HD source (720p) what bitrate is it at? admittedly I haven't had a pleasure of testing much true HD content in x264 but my experience with DVD backed-up to harddrive at ~5mbps and upscaled to 720p with Avisynth (on playback, becouse I don't want to change the source rez since most of the stuff is actually freelance film footage for my university that my friends do, which will end up on single layer dvd anyway) is that playback is smooth even though that machine is also a LAN file server, often used during playback for dumping video from captured tv shows from comp upstairs.
Now I understand that uscaling low rez is different from true HD rez playback, but still I have quite high bitrate and avisynth filters running realtime...
so basically what settings did you encode your files with?
P.S. I have both nero and ffdshow installed but got no clue what's decoding them :)

I Have a P4 3Ghz HT. 720p plays flawlessly with the nero showtime player for me (still, 1080i stutters ;) ). Do you have an example file for me to test ?

I currently encode with all options:
720p (true 1080i source from Enterprise)
Low Psyco enhancment
Automatic Deblock
2 pass
Encoding is set at 3.3mbps so my 42minute show is usually 1gig in size.
I think MCE has alot of overhead.
Who would like a clip? I could send it via yousendit.com
Let me know - thanks - I really really need an X2 4400 AMD :)
