How to Play WMV without Installing WMP

I am running win98se and have downloaded media player classic and it is a great program. However i do not wish to install microsoft windows media player on my machine. I have tried just installing the wmv codecs but to no avail. What steps are neccesary to allow me to play wmv files in mpc without installing the latest version of wmp?

So, do you have installed Codec Pack Version 7 and Version 9??

Tried MPC->Options->Tweaks->disable WM ASF Reader?

@magicclue: This doesn't have anything to do with it.

Just install wmfdist (http://pcastell.free.fr/Microsoft/wmfdist.exe)
and everything should really be working fine.
