View Full Version : error in playing avi
unplug

The error below shown when I try to open an avi file.
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID' (unknown)
VirtualDub requires a Video for windows (VFW) compatiable codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
What does the error mean?

It mean that you need to install XviD (codec to decompress that video). See XviD FAQ Q5 (get Koepi's binaries).

I got and installed the codec. However, it showed "No audio decompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format. (source format tag: 2000) when I try to play the avi. What audio decompressor do I need?

I think it is AC3, so search for AC3filter and install it.
Btw, i you can try GSpot to find what kind of video and audio your clip has.

For audio, GSpot shows Codec name: ac3 (0x2000) and its stat is 3 compatible codecs installed. But I can't play it with the previous error.

I get the same error message as unplug when I try to paly a XviD .avi in virtualdub. I also checked it with Gspot and it tells me that I have 4 compatible codecs installed, see below.
Does the arrow infront of pinnacle indicate that this is the default one to use and can that be a problem???
Thank you in advance
From Gspot
" Audio Format:
Code: 0x2000
Name: WAVE_FORMAT_AC3
Vendor: Dolby Laboratories, Inc
The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:
{Pinnacle AC3 Encoder (2 Channels)}
{AC3Filter}
--> {Pinnacle AC3 Decoder}
{Pinnacle Audio Codec}
To get more information by having GSpot instruct the O/S to "play" the file and then examine the results, press the button labeled "Render"."

You need to install fccHandler's AC3 ACM codec since VDub decodes audio via ACM and not dshow.
