View Full Version : Future AVC use in standalones?

So it looks like MPG4/AVC will be a-or-the standard for HD-DVD/Blu-Ray. What I'm wondering is: Does anyone know if the content is likely to be in a hardware-specific container (i.e. like VOBs), or is it likely that standalones will be able to simply play back MP4s, or AVIs for that matter, burned to the disc as data.
Of course, the whole question presupposes that we'll have HD-DVD/Blu-Ray burners anytime soon, but I'm just wondering if the standalones of tomorrow will be able to play back the Mp4s I create today.

from what i read
hd-dvd will use mpeg program streams (similar to .vob)
blu-ray will use mpeg transport streams
still i am sure that the specs will clearly define how a stream will have to get encoded and therefore i think its not possible to encode an avc stream today that will surely be compatible to hd-dvd/bluray
edit:
than it might be likely that we will also see avc decoding on hardware not related to hd-dvd/bluray (eg from CDRs or DVDs) as most chip manufacturers will surely hurry to offer chips with avc decoding capability
if nero continues pushing support for the files created with its tools on hardware, i think we will also see avc-in-mp4 support on hardware players. i dont think avc-in-avi has any future on hardware especially because as good as no avc encoder outputs .avi

Hmmm ... guess we'll have to wait on specs then. Thanks.
I guess it would likely be possible to demux streams and remux them into a program stream or TS. I suppose we'll have freeware tools for that someday.

you can already place avc in ps and ts, still i doubt the avc stream itself will be compliant to the hddvd/bluray specs

Reading between the lines... if Mpeg4 AVC is to be paired with advanced versions of DolbyDigital and DTS. It would seem the .MP4 container will not be used.... Not unless they are included as "private streams".

Remember that HDYV outside the US is likely to use AVC, i.e. decoder chips will be a mass market item. From there to putting it into a dvd-type machine is a minor step
