I always burn my DVDs using Ridata brand. Yesterday I bought a 50 pcs pack (Ridata 8x with logo).

The problem is: Using DVDs from this pack, I can only have a successful record if I burn the DVDs at 8x. Using 4x, I can burn with no problem, but when Nero do a "check written data", all kind of errors appears. If I try to extract the video files using DVD Decrypter, it can't read some sectors. If I try to play on a DVD Player, the movie freezes, and go on...

But everything is fine if I burn with 8x. What could be the problem ? Three weeks ago I bought the same Ridata 8x 50 pcs pack, and I could burn at 4x just fine.

No way I will burn with 4x again using this brand, I lost a lot of DVDs until I could find the problem. But I really would like to know what is going on...

Compare the media ID with DVDidentifier or Kprobe.
Maybe it's not the same.

Something very similar happened to me with RIdata 4x disks (the G4's). All of a sudden, there was a 50 pack spindle I got that could only burn at 2x mode, not 4x. Found out there was a quality problem and there were complaints all over the Internet about it.

The only thing I'd do is try another brand, like Taiyo Yuden for example, and see how their 8x disks do in your drive. Just to rule out that your drive has gone bad.

Hum...it's really not the same. The first is R05, and the second R03.

You mean G05, right? So you didn't even get the same type (G05 is -R and R03 is +R)...

In any case, RiDATA/RiTEK is notorious for their variable quality, and you'll never really know what kind of stuff you'll be getting with each spindle.
