What is this Rate Distortion Optimization I see has been checked in the CVS? :)
rate-distortion optimized MB types in I- and P-frames (--subme 6)

It's basicly the same as the VHQ modes in xvid, it means that the encoder is able to find the more-or-less optimal way to code the macroblocks, which should result in better quality at the cost of much slower encoding speed.

1.5/2 times slower actually.

The new rate-distortion optimized MB types are really great, the picture quality is a lot more stable !
great work, congratulations !
cheers

i now played around with rdo in x264 and got the following results:
4,00 fps, psnr avg: 42,66 global 42,39 <- me5 hex
3,04 fps, psnr avg: 42,87 global 42,61 <- me6 hex (rdo)
2,20 fps, psnr avg: 42,91 global 42,65 <- me6 umh
0,76 fps, psnr avg: 42,90 global 42,65 <- me6 esa
so enabling rdo (--subme 6) was ~ 25% slower than with --subme 5 on my sample, but also brought a relatively big quality increase (measured in psnr)
splitted this to an own thread

Just wondering -- who writes the mencoder man page? Because information like this should really go there.

its already there:
subq=<1-6>

6: Enables rate-distortion optimization of mac- roblock types in I- and P-frames. (best)
