View Full Version : 2-pass encoding using "Process Directory" in VDub?

I have a bunch of files in mpeg format and I'd like to convert them to Xvid to save HD space. In the past, I've used the "Process Directory" command in VDub, where it takes all the files in a folder, processes them to your settings, and outputs them (w/ the original filename, only now w/ an .avi extension) in a different folder. Obviously this is much ezr than loading, typing out the filename, and saving each individual file. The problem is that I can only get this to work w/ single-pass encoding. Since the filenames are automatically created, there's no way to differentiate between 1st and 2nd passes -- unless u save them to different folders. Well I tried that, but the 2nd pass files were much larger than they should have been, as if the 1st pass had never been done. Is there any way to do this?

I should also mention that I searched on this and I found 1 other thread that suggested reordering the job list. But that won't solve the naming issue... when the 2nd pass of the file is run, it will overwrite the 1pass (or at least give an error msg) becuz they'll have the same filename. If it did overwrite the 1pass, wouldn't that destroy the info that tells Xvid how to encode the 2pass to the correct filesize?

the avi file created by the first pass is not important, its the created statsfile that counts. you can safely overwrite the files.
