I posted this in another thread, but I believe it deserves it's own thread as to many people are saying that DVDD is going the way of the Dodo bird.
The following is from the author of CloneDVD:
I would be happy if you use CloneDVD, but dispite common believe you can combine AnyDVD with DVDDecrypter as well.
Just do the following:
1.) Use ElbyCDIO as the I/O model.
2.) Disable the structural protection removal in DVDDecrypter.
DVDDecrypter will see the disc as unprotected and will continue to work... forever.

So, as is apparent we can continue to use DVD Decrypter Forever. However, we would have to purchase AnyDVD to work with it.
You can get AnyDVD Here (www.slysoft.com)

I am not marketing AnyDVD. I just wanted to show that there was an available way to continue to use DVDD.
Lightning UK! obviously had AnyDVD in mind or he would not have made available the I/O option.

Excellent info. to have! Thanks very much. I've tried using these 2 progs in combination before but it didn't seem to work. I didn't know that I would need to change Decrypter settings to do it.
AnyDVD and CloneDVD are both excellent programs. I hope AnyDVD will continue to be updated and stay safe from lawsuits.
Thx,

addendum: BTW, anyone know if similar setting adjustments might be necessary in order to use Decrypter in conjunction with something like DVD43?

I hope AnyDVD will continue to be updated and stay safe from lawsuits.
AnyDVD development is located in Antigua where it is perfectly legal to make backup copies of DVD's. It is, also, constantly updated.
So, as I stated DVDD will be able to be used "Ad infinitum", with the help of AnyDVD.
Regards, ;)
P.S. I deleted the original post, as it was not needed since I started this thread
about DVDD. (For those looking for it).

Is that the "Check for structure protection" under the general tab?

I think the best way to "solve" the problem is to join an (european) open source backup software, so the author' knowledge will not wasted.
What about FairUse (http://www.fairusewizard.com/) ??

Well it seems as if DVD43 has released some source code to DvDidle so we can use this tool to Decrypt for Free. Try it Here (http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm). It works with ARccOS.

In the settings of DVD Region+CSS Free, you have a list of programs that actually work together...
DVD Decrypter is, by default, not added in this list, if you want to make them work together, you have to add DVD Decrypter manually.

ElbyCDIO is the name for the DLL that AnyDVD uses to do the on the fly decrypting of the DVD. So when that is ticked DVDD will accept what this DLL produces as an unrestricted DVD.

You can always change the settings back. However, I find that in practice unless there's a problem with the disc elbycdio and spti work pretty much the same. The differences are minor. But you can always just set it back without a restart - it just reloads its internals. DVD Decrytper really is/was a WONDERFUL little program in many ways - that's just one of them.

If you got an aversion to changing tick boxes so that the tool is set up doing the job proper, you are in the wrong forum. In life you can't allways get what you want, hmm sound like I song I believe, anyhow so the goalposts have been shifted by Macrovisio, now you got to go with the flow and You got to move, sounds like a nother song from the same group. I have built a AMD 64 machine with Win XP 64 professional as the O/S. Does anyone know if a 64 bit version of DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink are in the works.
These programs both seem to work in the 64 bit environment but at a speed degraded to between 25 to 33% slower than under Win XP professional.

DVDDecrypter has stopped development under legal threat and there will be no further versions after 3.5.4.0. (search the forums for more on that)
DVDshrink had stopped development last year. 3.2.0.15 is the last one I believe. It's author supposedly went to work with Ahead to work on Nero Recode.

Maybe, but not as well as DVDD did. (Just my opinion.) The forums over at cdfreaks are filled with problems with the latest versions of AnyDVD, DVD Fab Decrypter & DVD43.
Seems AnyDVD had terrible trouble with Hitch (and a couple of others), but DVDD worked just fine for me. DVDfab's output files sometimes will not import into compression apps, DVD43 isn't updated as fast.

Such as? Seriously, you don't think that DVD43 or DVD Fab Decrypter are viable solutions yet, do you? Maybe someday but not today.
People chose AnyDVD (and still do) because SlySoft has excellent support. Nothing like not being able to rip your latest movie purchase, and having someone to e-mail about it.

DVD43Free do have problems with ARccOS DVDs for region code 2.
AnyDVD - never used it and don't have an opinion on that program.
DVDFab Decrypter - works great with DVD Rebuilder but not with DVD Shrink/Nero Recode 2 for ARccOS discs.
There are also two new tools; Magic DVD Ripper and Dvd95Copy. The later might be released as a standalone ripping tool.
Magic is compatible with DVD Shrink/Nero Recode 2. There is at the moment the old DVD Shrink/Nero Recode bug that causes problems for Magic for certain ARccOS region 2 discs. DVDFab Decrypter have the same problem with this old bug.
The author of Magic is working on the solution. The problem is for RE2 region code 2 and a few other old ARccOS discs. The latest ARccOS discs don't causes this problem.
So in my opinion - There are several other good decrypting programs already now to use - that handles all current protection systems.

I tried the latest version of DVDFab Decrypter, and had no issues with Hitch. Worked perfectly with Nero recode. Maybe people are using an older version. I used the version from 6-22. You can get it here: http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
I wonder if people did not enable CSS, RC, RCE, Macrovision, UOPs and Sony ARccOS protection removal in Settings.

Hitch region code 1 - the program don't have issues with that region code. Try a region code 2 instead and you will end up with problems.

Sorry about that, ignored that important fact. (I hope some day the world decides on one format, as there is in music CDs, but that is a whole other topic.)
@ digitalman
Hitch region code 1 - the program don't have issues with that region code. Try a region code 2 instead and you will end up with problems. Why? I can't imagine a reason for that. The protections methods are the same in Z1 and Z2, no?
cynthia_old
5th July 2005, 05:48
To be honest - I don't know.
If you take DVD43Free it works very well with region code 1 - but not region code 2.
You have the same problem with DVD Decrypter. Why needed always region code 2 discs a new update for that program to handle the ARccOS problem? Closer is another DVD that works well with DVD Decrypter region code 1 - but the Italian, Dutch and UK region code needed a fix (PSL file) to rip the DVD.
DVDFab Decrypter seems to have the same problem for region code 2 ARccOS DVDs.
So in my opinion there are always problems with region code 2 ARccOS DVDs.

Regarding using elbyCDIO with DVDDecrypter:
Make sure you have the latest version. Then click on Tools, Settings and then on the General TAB uncheck check for structure protection.
OK, that part I understand.
Do also Remove Structure Protection on the File, ISO and ISO Read Mode tab.
This second part I don't understand. Would you please be more specific?

Go to Tools, then Settings section of DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4.0 Uncheck remove Structure Protection on the File Mode, IFO Mode and ISO Read Mode tab. Uncheck in the General tab "Check for Structure Protection".
Basically you Uncheck anything to do with "Structure Protection". That way AnyDVD running in the background can do it's thing (You have to have AnyDVD to make this work).
Oh!, Make sure you go to the I/O tab and change from SPTI to the ElbyCDIO.

Hi feedback -
Since I have played with DVDDecrypter's settings a little since I installed it, I set it back to all the defaults and then closed it. Then I rebooted and set all of the settings exactly per your instructions and closed it again. AnyDVD 5.3.2.1 is running properly with the little red fox in the tray. I launch DVDDecrypter and double-check the specified settings, and begin the decryption of Bordertown. All is well for about 20 minutes, until halfway through the last cell of the last VTS. This is the message I've been getting for three days:

Now, I saw in another thread where if it's left running like this, it will eventually get the whole thing. Earlier today, I left it run for about an hour and it only got a few of the missing 200+ megs of data needed to complete the file. Looking at the numbers I could tell it was going to take another twenty or thirty hours, so naturally I stopped it.
That's where it stands, and this is exactly the same sort of results I've gotten with Farewell My Concubine.
In answer to your questions in another thread, I am in Region 1 (USA), and I do not have DVDFab Decrypter 2.9.3.0 - I have 2.9.2.3 but will go looking for the newer version right now.
Thanks for taking the time to help.

feedback, in answer to your questions from the other thread (in an effort to bring everything together in one thread) ---
Well the movie has been backed up successfully by others, might there be a physical problem with the disk, like a scratch?
Farewell My Concubine - The disk is new and perfect. In fact, since this was the first time I had ever been unable to rip a disk, I thought it was defective and exchanged it with the merchant.
Bordertown - the disk is new and perfect.
Both disks play fine in both of my standalone external DVD players.
Did you try DVD Decrypter with the settings I indicated with AnyDVD?
Yes, details & log above.
Did you try DVDFab Decrypter v.2.9.3.0?
Yes, I went and got it and tried it just now. It ripped the 7.5 gigs down to 4 gigs even though I had told it I had an 8.5 gig blank disk and it promised 100% quality. The resulting files are all compressed (transcoded?) much smaller than on the source disk, and the problem file, VTS 4 Cell 3, still ends at the previous problem point. Just ends; the time code says it's going to end there, and it does. It didn't get one frame past the girl's face, in fact, it stopped a few frames short of that point.
Have you tried another media player?
No, but I wonder if it could matter when only half the cell is there. I'm getting about 220 megs of a 440 meg cell. The several times I've managed to produce a full-sized final cell, everything chokes on it; VOBBlanker, DVDShrink, any number of the simple 'single-click' rippers, in short, nothing I have tried sees a single frame past the girl's face already shown. However, on your advice I will again re-rip it and try to produce a full-sized cell and then try a different media player.
Are you in PAL land or NTSC? What Region?
NTSC (USA) Region 1.
Have you ReRipped the movie?
Just the once with DVDFab Decrypter v.2.9.3.0 but I'll try again without AnyDVD. No disrespect intended but DVDFab Decrypter v.2.9.3.0 bugs me because of the nearly absolute lack of settings, and it is compressing or transcoding or something even when I tell it not to. I mean, I could put these disks in the external drive and capture them with my capture card, but that's not what I'm after; I'm looking for a true digital copy.
I appreciate your time and suggestions, and I'll keep after them until I get them copied.

Yes, I went and got it and tried it just now. It ripped the 7.5 gigs down to 4 gigs even though I had told it I had an 8.5 gig blank disk and it promised 100% quality.
Oops. Allow me to make a correction.
When you install DVDFab Decrypter, it says "DVDFab Express" - the same identical thing it says when you install DVDFab Express. In the above report, I was using Express, shareware on trial, not the freeware Decrypter.
So as soon as I discovered this, I went and got the Decrypter as recommended, but it didn't help. I re-ripped the disk both with and without AnyDVD in place. In both cases, the progress guage got to about the midpoint of the last cell and all of a sudden zoomed to the end. It gave me the 'successfully completed' report but I knew there was no data there before I even looked. Nonetheless, I tried it in three different media players. The movie ends at the previous problem point.
Now just about everything I've said up to now, and the 'melting' captures I linked to earlier, has all been from Bordertown. Since then I have repeated all of these steps with Farewell My Concubine and gotten identical results.
I saw a thread in the past couple days about Sneakers (Was that you, feedback? I can't find it now using Search) and it told how Sneakers had unusual copy protection but it was finally defeated. Well, I pulled my Sneakers off the shelf and ripped it smooth as glass, nothing out of the ordinary. My suggestion is that different production runs may use different protection schemes, that is to say, maybe my version of Farewell My Concubine is somewhat different from the one successfully cracked.
All I can say for certain at this point is... I'm stumped.

Hmmm! Lets see I am looking at the original disk of my kids "Pocahontas" by "GoodTimes DVD" NTSC ALL.
45 minutes is the length of the movie, it should be in the $5.00 bin.

Yes, both disks play perfectly in two different standalone players. One is a regular set top deck, the other is a small 5 inch LCD screen portable deck. However, they both choke in my two PC decks, both Lite-On brand, one is a reader, the other a writer.

Thank you for the link, cynthia. I had been searching hard and found your earlier, similar guide (#51810) before coming back and seeing your most recent post.
I've been kind of jumping back and forth between Bordertown and Farewell My Concubine, but now, since you and feedback are offering so much help, I think it best to settle on one and then once it's beaten, apply the same principles to the other, since the errors I'm getting are precisely the same. So, the following is all about Farewell My Concubine.
It's not from Columbia or Sony, it's from Miramax. I did exactly as you said, but there is nothing in the log resembling:
W 05:59:25 Possible Structure Protection Found!
W 05:59:25 1 area has been marked as 'suspect'.
W 05:59:25 Dummy sectors will be inserted where necessary.
Also, when I'm all done, the PSL reports nothing to export. This was with structure protection disabled, and again with it enabled, but in both cases without AnyDVD running in the background, since I didn't see it mentioned in your instructions. Should I try it again with AnyDVD running? I only ask because it takes more than an hour each time and I'm wondering if I might damage my drive.

Finally, when I play the files, again in various media players, it just locks up at the problem point same as it has in all previious attempts.
'So if you have the above indications' ... I don't. In short, no progress, and I can't see any way to build a PSL2 file.

You could try to create a PSL version 1 file.
It should look like this one
PSL
204707-204720
204721-204734
204735-204748
204749-204762The first row only says 'PSL' and the rest of the rows are the intervall of the faulty sectors. Then import it as a PSL file in DVD Decrypter. You will see that the program complaints about it not being a PSL2 file - but it should work to import it.

OK... What numbers would I use? The numbers from all of the 'Failed to read Sector XXXXXXX' lines? Those are all sequential, so I don't understand what you mean by 'interval' - I see your example numbers are a range of 14 inclusive.

It should be like this one
PSL
250125-250150The PSL file should cover all the sectors that the program can't read. In this example it does.

In the course of following your instructions I learned that DVDDecrypter's log is limited to 20,000 lines. I experimented and patched things together and learned that I have 71,064 bad sectors in a row, up to and including the last sector in the file.
So, here is my PSL:
PSL

And here is what happened when I tried to import it:

The 'can't read' sectors are replaced with a black image - so it sounds more as a bad pressing/manufactoring than a protected disc.
But you can play the disc without problems in your player - so it sounds really odd.
DVD Release Date: September 15, 2004.
I haven't found any other posts about this movie - and that is odd if it should be protected in a certain way. The only guess I have is this:
Oh, then I guess it is one of the new DVDs that use bad media.
Those are not readable in every DVD-Rom drive.
I have the same problem with my Pioneer DVD-Rom.
But when I put those into my dvd-burner then it's ok.
So try to use a different drive to read the DVD. http://www.cdr-zone.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2818&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15
There is also a later firmware for your device: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2059
The two problem files are:
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_7.VOB Never heard that a .BUP file had been/can be copy protected.
Encoding: Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only. But your log file shows region code 1-8 - that is also odd.

Just an added thought.
In the USA there are counterfeit drugs (ex. Lipitor) that are in the retail drugstore pipeline. Third party wholesalers have had problems with identifying or assuring the pedigree of their drugs. That is why some large retail drugstore chains such as CVS will on longer do business with third party wholesalers that cannot assure CVS of the pedigree of their drugs.
A counterfeit ring in Miami, Florida was busted making perfect Pressed copies, of for example Lipitor, with little or no active ingredients.
Now to the point. Since the aforementioned problem with drugs is taking place, is it not plausible that counterfeit Pressed DVD's have entered the mainstream retail marketplace. I certainly believe so.

Yes. The first time it happened I had never come across a disk I couldn't copy, and this one stumped me, so I returned it to the merchant as defective. They replaced it with another brand new sealed disk, and the problems are identical.
As far as that Amazon link, please excuse me for causing confusion. That is to the Bordertown set of three; I am currently focusing on Farewell My Concubine to minimize such confusion. Farewell My Concubine is region 1.
So try to use a different drive to read the DVD.
I have two DVD drives; one reader and one writer. Until now everything I have reported has been done on the reader. In view of your latest post I decided to try the writer and I did indeed get different behavior.
With the reader, I did not get the 'Possible structure protection!' alert in the log, with or without AnyDVD in place. When I switch to the writer, I only get it with AnyDVD in place. As soon as I see it, even before starting the rip, I am able to export this PSL:
PSL2
0:0xDAE7043F,3492588,FAREWELL_MY_CONCUBINE
1:296,22174
1:22235,22849
1:22850,546899
1:546900,1071123
1:1071124,1595278
1:1595279,2119423
1:2119424,2643710
1:2643711,3167839
1:3167840,3492535
When I try to rip the disk it gets anywhere from 128k to 4000k and then it stops. Time remaining shows as unknown. The total bytes ripped never increases once it stops; all that happens is that the two time elapsed clocks fall out of synch; I have left it run for many minutes until they're a full two seconds apart with absolutely nothing else happening.
From the moment I start the rip the rest of the system becomes unstable. Anything that tries to access a directory locks up with a busy cursor. Explorer, of course, but also any app if I do a "Save As" or anything else that wants to see a directory. None of the Start bar buttons work. CRTL/ALT/DELETE brings up the usual dialog, but will not close DVDDecrypter nor any other programs no matter how many times I try. Nor will it restart or shut down the system. All DVDDecrypter does is give me that annoying, condescending 'Please be patient, I heard you the first time' message when I try to close it. In short, the whole system collapses. Even the power switch does not work; the only way out is the reset switch. I have tried this ten different ways (literally) over the past several hours and every single time, I ended up hitting the Reset switch just as described.
This is a brand new machine with a brand new installation of XP Pro SP2, by the way.
Encoding: Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only.
Source Media Region Code: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
The reason for the difference is that sometimes I have AnyDVD running in the background and sometimes not. If not, it's Region 1. If so, it's region free. Also, I have caused some confusion by switching back and forth between Bordertown (All region) and Farewell My Concubine (Region 1). I have since stopped with Bordertown and stayed on FMC in an attempt to focus.
since others have ripped the disk successfully, the problem is following that disk. I consider the matter closed based on that likelihood.
I saw a thread about Sneakers being so tough to copy, with one vob cell a full 1.0 gig rather than the usual .99 gig, and what all the person went through to get it ripped. I pulled my copy of Sneakers off the shelf and looked at the directory and there are no cells of a full gig; the big ones are all .99 gig. I ripped it immediately, no problems at all. So I suggest that different production runs can carry different protection schemes.
Is it a bootleg? I doubt it most sincerely. It's a six dollar disk brand new sealed, not a rarity at all. I've mentioned that I've exchanged this disk with the merchant; they're a very high volume high profile eBay seller with spectacular feedback. I had bought a large batch of DVDs from them, and it was a month before I got around to watching FMC and then asking for the exchange. They exchanged it, but since it was a month later I would think they would have sold a few copies in the meantime, that is, the replacement came from a different place in the 'stack,' possibly even from a different carton or shipment. I'm not prepared to write it off as a pressing problem because it plays perfectly on both standalone decks, and also because Bordertown has the same precise problems and it, too, plays perfectly on both external decks. FMC came from eBay; Bordertown came from a local retail merchant. No way are they *both* bootlegs.
Since it now seems that it's ultimately going to come down to 'you need to buy a different brand/model of DVD deck' I'm considering buying a second copy of the title as a backup. It galls me beyond description to say that, and it's letting the wicked, greedy corporations win, but I don't see any other way. Unless there is a new avenue of approach to consider, I'm
prepared to give up... however, not out of belief that I'm working against two fluke disks, but rather, out of sheer exhaustion.

I write this because I have seen some people posting suggestions, for various commercial payware applications, as replacements for DVD Decrypter (DVDFab Decrypter is freeware and a fine app. to use, I am not talking about DVDIdle here, freeware or not).
I believe, as I indicated in the beginning of this thread, that LIGHTNING UK! had commercial applications in mind when he put forth DVDD because the I/O tab allows the choice of "ElbyCDIO-Elaborate Bytes and VSO software" which are commercial alternatives, to use or help DVD Decrypter if need be.
Now with DVDD no longer being developed and if you still want to use the many useful functions of DVDD then as my suggestion use AnyDVD and follow the directions at the start of this thread.
Moreover, if you are determined that you are going to spend money on a commercial app. with which to replace DVDD then spend it on an application that LIGHTNING UK! would probably recommend himself...as a matter of fact, I think by putting the alternative I/O options in DVD Decrypter he has in deed and action made a recommendation

Well I totally agree with you SeeMoreDigital. If the newest DVD43 (3.6.2v. I have not tried yet) will work with DVDD and allow it to work as it did before I am all for it.
Free is always a good price. The info. was for those people that are determined to spend upwards of 40 Euro's, dollars, Quid etc. for a commercial product.
Is DVD43 working O.K. with DVDD? Are you disabling the "Check for Structure Protection" in DVDD or just letting it run with all setting in DVDD set as usual? I'll give it a go myself on the next Sony ARccOS protected DVD that I buy, although that may be awhile as I don't see them very often or I don't care for the particular movie if I do.

With AnyDVD running, my program may not do its job properly. You should disable whilst running DVD Decrypter.
The above was posted by LIGHTNING UK! (the author of DVDD for those that don't know this fact).
As he indicated his program MAY NOT do its job properly. Not absolutely, not with certainty but it MAY not. In other words, it is a possibility that it may not work properly (did I say it enough).http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_13_3.gif
That is why, I would say, that he made available the I/O option to use with AnyDVD.
In many instances just running AnyDVD with DVDD will work just fine.
However, as the author of DVDD indicated above, and it still bears repeating, it may not do its job properly.
So, as you see more Arccos protected disks you would probably have more success setting up DVD Decrypter as the Author intended by using the appropriate I/O settings he made available.

Just do the following:

2.) Disable the structural protection removal in DVDDecrypter.
DVDDecrypter will see the disc as unprotected and will continue to work... forever.

(I only used file-mode, to copy DVD's to HD)
I was hoping someone else picked it up....., but it hasn't.
So let's hope AnyDVD will stay. As long as DVD is a standaard there is not much to do to prevent DVD's from copying....
Even more. Here in the Netherlands it's perfectly LEGAL, to make a copy of whatever DVD or CD you lay youre hands on. You even don't have to posess the original. We pay however extra 'taxes' on oure empty media. As much as 60 Eurocents on each empty DVD. So we can copy what we like, it's legal.
And despite the EU, the Netherlands have this rules for their own use. SO if you buy youre DVD's just over the border (e.d. Germany) you get rit of rhe extra taxes too. Hope this will last forever and ever...... Dear Dear Holland...

I got a tip for you, quote and /quote. Asides that, DVD Decrypter has such useful things like creating Chapter Info times, removing PUOs etc. AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter is what I will use waaay into the future.

Can I suggest something for you to try to resolve your LBA out of range error?
If you have access to another DVD reader - but NOT liteon, can you try to decrypt using that reader?
Reason is because I had the same LBA error with decrypter. After searching through the net and reading about your problem, I came up with a brainwave of trying another reader. I have a Hitachi and I tried decrypting using that reader. And there were no LBA errors. Decrypting went fine.
I suspect that liteon readers are prone to that error, which is a shame because they appear to be such good readers.
Anyway let us all know whether that sorted out the problem

Lots of people use the PGCEdit PSL2Plugin wizard with very good success. Me? I don't bother with that nonsense...I bought AnyDVD a long time ago and have never once regretted it. I also bought CloneDVD, as well and have never regretted that, either. Especially now that ArCCOS and Ripguard are prevalent on many new titles. AnyDVD is regularly updated and Slysoft hangs around the cdfreaks forums so you can get really good support. There is a discount now for cdfreaks users where you can get up to 15 bucks off Slysoft products. Make sure you take advantage of the discount. Personally, I'd go for the CloneDVD/AnyDVD bundle myself, but, you should decide that for yourself. Remember that both have 21 day trials. Good luck with your decision!
