View Full Version : Playing avi/xvid/divx at 1.1x, 1.2x etc speeds?

I like divx and such, but one really nice thing about like windvd playing an SVCD is the ability to jack the playback speed to like 1.4 or 1.5, while it fixes teh "pitch" of the audio so that it still sounds right. Makes it easy to whip through a season of TV episodes in short order...
Is there some player/codec/DLL/dealio that will do the same with an xvid/AVI/divx file?
A friend of mine got a cheapo hardware player at wal-mart that at least can speed the xvid up, but doesn't correct the audio.

Lol, I've never heard of such a thing before - saving time by speeding up the film! That's crazy, man... :)

Well, if the character in the movie decides to take a long walk on the beach, he is wasting your time, right? Make him run then! :D

MPlayer (http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/win32/) can speed up and slow down files on the fly. Does a good job of it too, but it doesnt correct audio pitch (maybe there is an option?).
in my input.conf
g speed_incr 0.2 #increase speed by 20%
h speed_incr -0.2 #decrease speed by 20%
j speed_set 1 #back to normal speed

Zoomplyer can do the same. The F5 skin has a "Play rate control" slider and in the options you can adjust the desired values of the play rate.
But no audio pitch.

Actually it just struck me that I do know of a directshow filter that adapt the audio pitch to the speed of the movie, but I don't know to what extent the speed is configurable. It's designed to stop jerkiness caused by differences in frame rate and vertical sync rate on the monitor, and the idea is to sync the framerate to the monitor refresh rate. I have never tried it, so I don't know what it can do, but check it out.

And thanks for asking about this, I really Laugh Out Loud when I think of you watching stuff while fast-forwarding! It's insane! :D

it has to be said...this thread made me laugh!
surely the enjoyment of watching these episodes is removed when u play them back at high speed
madness indeed! :goodpost:

Well to be fair I do sometimes use it as a means to fast forward, much more elegant than dragging a progresss bar to an unknown scene or instantly skipping all over the place with mplayer.

In BSPlayer, the -> and <- keys allow you to forward and rewind on the fly during playback.

I just discovered that PowerDVD does pitch correction on up to 2X speed on everything it can play - avi/divx/xvid, mpg/vcd/svcd etc.. Now that you have a tool to save some time with, be sure you do something useful with your spared time...
