I'm just about to replace my old CDROM by a DVD-ROM drive.
Can anybody recommend a particular drive (IDE only)?
My choice would be a Toshiba SD-M1612. Any negative experiences with that drive?

I have the same question ... and the same preference for Toshiba.
I also need help understanding how to make this work with my P3/800 (with Matrox G400-TV capture/video card). How does the DVD-ROM hook into the video card? sound card?

How does the DVD-ROM hook into the video card? sound card? Thru software. There is a cable to connect the drive to a sound card, digital and/or analog, but your programs decode the sound and video straight off the dvd. No cable required.

You should go to StorageReview.com and look at their LeaderBoard. The best drives they're reviewed in a category are posted there.

Hi,
I don't have any personal experiences with the Toshiba-Drive, but in another board I found this:
-----------------------------------
It's sad but true. This model can rip region protected DVD with only 2x speed. The same as my 1512 model. So for there is no solution for this.
-----------------------------------
Sound interesting to me... :(

i have a Toshiba SD-M1612 and it true , it can rip/play copy protected dvds only at 2-4x :( , but that makes it very silent during dvd playback :)
If you go here http://hijacker.rpc1.org/toshiba_nolimit/ you will find instructions for removing the speed limitation on ripping. I just flashed my Toshiba 1612 and obtained 10.1x ripping on a scratched rental! (for benchmark purposes only, of course). I've had the 1612 for year and half; never any problems but never over 4.5X ripping either. this firmware rocks!!

I placed a thread here a month ago. Sorry to find out you did not read my thread about the toshiba sd-m1612.
Hijacker is working with neo on the toshiba sd-m1502 also but has problems to find the protection.
I have both the sd-m1502 and sd-m1612 they are the best and if you place the new Hijacker firmware on the sd-m1612 you have read speed up to 15x.
What is the Pioneer DVD-115 good for?
I only get ripping speed below 2X, I'm using XP-SP1 and have the latest regionfree firmware (1.33). DMA is enabled.
