I want to back up my dvds on a hard disk, in order to have a video jukebox.
I need a good quality video (enough for videoprojection), 2 sound track 5.1, and subtitles.
The final file should be less than 2 giga bytes
Which format is the best ?
1 bivx/xvid
2-ogm
3-matroska
4-vob compressed ??

Hi and welcome to the forum! ;)
Difficult to answer, because this is much like "personal taste", finally "the best" solution will be what you try and decide...
But in order to help a little bit, and saying only my personal opinion and depending how big is the film you want to backup: Xvid (free) or DivX are going to give you very good results...
From another point of view, if you want to keep two 5.1 audio tracks + subs under 2 GB, you are going to sacrifice a lot of video quality... as I said, it depends of your taste.
But there is now a new program going around called RatDVD (http://www.ratdvd.dk/) that seems to be very interesting and may be a good option for you.
Here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=95287) is some information about this new tool.
Greetings! ;)
