first post here for me, hopefully i can give you enough info to avoid obvious questions.....

1. 99% of the things you guys discuss are WAY over my head, so just so you know, i have read alot of the FAQ's and so forth, but i fear i will end up asking questions that have already been answered somewhere in all this plethora of knowledge, my apologies

2. my system is composed of

Water Cooled by Danger Den TDX/Black Ice Extreme 12cm Radiator/Hydor L30II Pump
P4 3.0E @ 3.758Mhz
2 x 512MB PDP 3200+XBL TCCD 1:1 @ 2.5-3-3-7 @ 2.7v
Abit IC7-G Max II mobo
XFX 6600GT 128 AGP 8x
Antec TruePower 550W PSU
Audigy ES

some of that may not be important to you guys, my background is mainly a gamer/overclocker, and i am pretty new to the DVD scene, just got an HP(Benq) 640i Light Scribe DVD burner for it :D

3. the programs i am currently using to make my DVD archives are DVD Shrink 3.2 for editing/decoding/encoding/resizing, and DVD Decrypter for burning although i have installed many of the programs listed as needed in the very thorough guides, i have yet to use the others as even the guides seem to perplex me at times

the questions:

i have one question about DVD Shrink

in the options there is a place to choose the decoder, VMR9, VMR7, default system, software, etc.........which one would be best to use, i have left it at default so far

my other question has to do with my latest attempt to backup "The Aviator"

after re-authoring, cutting out un-needed frames, removing un-needed subtitles and audio files, i was left with a file over 7Gb in size, i let DVD Shrink auto compress and encode to an iso file which i burned to a DVD-R disc, however, unlike all the other backups i have made, this one came out strange both on the iso and after burning to disc, roughly the first third or half of the movie has a very strong blue hue to it, whites are non-existant, taking on a blue hue........what in the world is up with this?

any other suggestions helpful :thanks:

We have something in common. First I used DVDDecrypter in ISO mode ripped "The Aviator" and then reauthored in shrink and burned. I got the same "blue" problem.

Ran it with DVD-RB same problem.

Notice the scene when they are playing golf on the golfcourse... the grass is blue not green. I repeated the procedure and reauthored with Nero and burned, same problem.

It seems as if green in the first layer of the dual layer original disk has been removed.

I had all the PUO's and all structure protection ticked in DVD Decrypter.

Anybody else seen this problem.

Regards,:)

P.S. To answer your question, for preview I use the default setting video renderer.
P.P.S. Your subject title should indicate to the viewer what it is you are posting about. ie. "Color problem with a DVD." And so forth, not just " O.K. here goes". It's in the rules.

yeah, it was my first post, thats why i titled it that way

the golf course scene looks like a "dream" scene, very abstract indeed

good to know it isn't me, didn't think i would ever get a reply, thanks

Did you first, like me, rip to your hard drive with DVD Decypter in ISO mode?

What settings did you use if you did? ie. Ticked Remove Structure Protection etc....

Did you rip in File Mode? What settings if you did?

You indicated that you burn with DVD Decypter.

Regards and Welcome to doom9:)

thanks for the welcome

no, i ripped using DVD Shrink, which is what I always do, rip as .iso to HDD with shrink using deep analysis and sharpness correction, and re-author using shrink, remove unwanted frames with shrink, then burn using decrypter, nothing changed as far as settings

i found that it is in the .iso file though before burning no matter what i use to play it back, so it has nothing to do with the disc or burning program or method of choice......

i used the guide here

Well I finally figured it out. There is nothing wrong with our backup methods, the movie was "stylized" to look that way.

In an early portion of the movie, the color blue appears in a number of unexpected places. Scorsese had some of the images altered to change green to blue in order to partially simulate early two-tone Technicolor movies.
I found that little tidbit Here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Aviator) In the "Plot" section.

Glad to resolve the "Blue" issue!

holy crap...lol

you know, after i bought it, i didn't play the original, i have gotten used to buying them, ripping, checking the backup to make sure it is of acceptable quality, and into storage the original goes

i have to say that they went too far with the "images altered to change green to blue in order to partially simulate early two-tone Technicolor movies."

it's quite distracting

thanks

Yeah, noticed that too. Why didn't you guys just look at your original DVD's in the first place? You've gotta atleast watch the original, including the extras, atleast one time before putting them away for storage.

@Backflip

No excuse.
I should know better. Starting to become a little to lax in my backup procedure.

Regards, ;)

the answer to your question is in the post right before your post, its a habit i have gotten into, and i usually dont even watch the special features, which is why i remove them in my backups, then all i have to do is pop in my disc, dont have to push play or mess with menu's (nice feature to have in case you ever lose your remote btw)

most dvd's i buy never make it to my dvd player, they go straight from backup to storage
