Since DVD Decrypter has now been shutdown, is there another ripper that will be recommended to work with DVD RB? The main installation FAQ still lists the web site to DVD Decrytper which is now the domain of the company that forced Decryter to shutdown. The link should probably be removed. It was also recommended that people still using the program should disable to update check.

I updated the link to Doom9's mirror. I don't know what is going on regarding mirroring the program itself. LIGHTNING UK!'s letter said he wrote telling hosts to take it down, but I don't know if it was a suggestion, request, or demand. In any case people should be able to find it for a while yet.

We will have to see what type of replacement comes along. Odds are we won't have one until something new comes along that the current version of Decrypter can't handle.

Hopefully it will be a while before a new protection scheme is introduced and this software will be useful for a while to come.

Incidentally, over at CDfreaks.com is the authors full statement reguarding this. He isn't insisting or requesting that admins remove any DVD Decrypter files they are hosting, but merely says that they might consider taking it down in case the company goes after those mirroring the files.

Until I'm given a C & D letter, I intend to host the DVD-D setup file on my own website, So anyone needing it can get it here. (http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=downloads)

Thank you BadServo, I now have a copy for archiving.
My regards to LUK, hope he has no legal problems.

Having a background in the Intertainment Industry, I am aware of their attitude towards us DVD copiers. But they have no one to blame but themselves, all DVD's are manufactured in China. Why do you think a movie is posted on the Newsgroups, before it is shown in the theaters?
They are shooting themselves in the foot. The Industry has to take the blame for all the pirating. If they would keep the work in the home country, i.e. USA, I believe the situation woul not be as bad.

All I can say is, THANK YOU HOLLYWOOD!!!

Here, here.
That's "EXACTLY" why all this crap is happening!
It's all about "money"
cheap labor = problems in the long run.

Wish LUK the very best

Here it is the message posted... :(
Hello world,

I"ve got some good news and some bad news.Let’s start with the good.... (tumble weed passes by)Ok, and now onto the bad: DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 is the last version you"ll ever see.We hoped this day would never come, but it has, and I can promise you, nobody is more gutted about it than I am.

What started as a bit of fun, putting a GUI around some existing code, turned into something that I can only describe as ‘part of me’ – yes, I know that’s sad ;-) As I"ve recently been made aware (by a letter, hand delivered to my door, last Tuesday), due to some law that was changed back in October 2003, circumventing copy protection isn"t allowed.

Ok so it has taken a while (almost 2 years), but eventually "a certain company" has decided they don"t like what I"m doing (circumventing their protection) and have come at me like a pack of wolves. I"ve no choice but to cease everything to do with DVD Decrypter.I realise this is going to be one of those "that sucks - fight them!" kinda things, but at the end of the day, it"s my life and I"m not about to throw it all away (before it has even really started) attempting to fight a battle I can"t possibly win.

If 321 Studios can"t do it with millions, what chance do I have with £50?! As I"m sure most of you have already noticed, the site has been down for a few days. That surprised me as much as the next person (slight breakdown in communication), or I would have issued this statement on it directly.

So anyway, from this point forward, I"m no longer permitted to provide any sort of assistance with anything that helps people infringe the rights of "a certain company".That means, no more emails, no more forum posts, no PM"s, no nothing! END OF STORY.The domain name will be transferred over to the company by the end of the week (9th June, according to the undertakings I have to sign) so don"t email it thinking "Oh, I"ll just ask LIGHTNING UK! for support on this". You"ll not be getting the intended recipient and could be landing yourself in sh1t!

With 3.5.4.0 being the last version, it makes sense for everyone to disable the "check for new versions" feature, as obviously there won"t be any. Of course what I really mean is that you should all stop using the program out of respect for the company’s rights.

Anyone hosting DVD Decrypter is advised to cease doing so immediately. I"ve the feeling they won"t stop with just me. I"m having to contact anyone I know of that is (at the very least, the "mirror" sites), and tell them to stop. Copies of those emails must also be sent to the solicitors so they can check I"m doing everything I"m supposed to. If I don’t, I die.

It is of course down to the owners of those sites to react how they want to. It"s not my job to force you to do anything you don"t want to, I"m just giving you some friendly advice. Maybe it"s just me, but I see this as a bit of an "end of an era". I realise there are other tools, but there"s no telling how much longer they"ll last, and not only that, mine was the oldest! I"ve met loads of great people over the years and I want to take this opportunity to wish them every success for the future - yes DDBT peeps, that includes you lot! : "(I hope you"ve all enjoyed my contribution to the DVD scene and maybe I"ll see ya around sometime.

LIGHTNING UK!

Not sure if this would work, until I have a DVD that has the Arcos protection that DVD Decrypter doesn't support I can't test it

I have now installed the latest version of AnyDVD as that supports the very latest Arcos protection which DVD Decrypter doesn't, so my thinking is I use AnyDVD to remove this protection while DVD Decrypter is doing the ripping

They run happily together with both of them pickingup the fact that said DVD does have CSS protection and remove it as they should

Unless I have access to one of the DVD' sthat has protection that DVD Decrypter doesn't support anymore I can't test my theory

Or does DVD Decrypter use its own method of transferring data from the DVD drive

You can use DVDD with AnyDVD, just:

Goto Tools, Settings, I/O and click ElbyCDIO
and unclick remove structural protection under whichever mode you use (File, IFO)

I've heard that VStrip (http://www.doom9.org/software.htm#rippers) is quite good but as long as DVD Decrpter still works, I'll use it.

Just for pointing out the now-obvious, apparently the company behind the "cease and desist" demand was Macrovision. Ya know, I'm sick of the "we'll stick the genie back into the bottle" mentality known as bought-and-paid for corporate U.S. law on copy protection issues. No matter what they say, this is still the net effect. I don't know of any real world examples where this would be tolerated, aside from this issue. Technology advances, development and implementations are relentless --- a "cork" isn't the answer --- nor is alienating the end-user in my book.

Macrovision was never a good idea in the first place. I can't count the number of times I've been in a situation where I was unable to watch a DVD or Video Cassette I bought and paid for because the equipment in the place I was trying to view it was old. This was especially bad int eh eary days of DVD adoption, when many people I knew still had the old-school coaxial only inputs on their TV. Fat load of good it does you to have a portable DVD-player when everywhere you go, you have to connect it through a VCR, rendering it unwatchable.

I'd be willing to bet that when considering the gross nunber of times Macrovision protection has been circumvented, a very large portion would be people simply trying to view the material they paid their hard-earned cash for, and not for some unscrupulous use as the corporate entities would have us believe.

Just my 2 cents.
