Do I need an external plugin or dll to be able to view subtitles off a dvd using Media Player Classic? When I start a disc and right-click to goto the Subtitle section to turn them on, it's always greyed out.

hmm. good question. i always use powerDVD for that, or i've got textsubs and an avi file. never actually tried playing DVDs in MPC (and definitely not WMP).
however, if the menus play properly, there is definitely a subpicture renderer installed and functioning (subtitles and menu buttons are basically the same thing).

I think you need to enable another Video renderer at Playback -> Ouput. You need to use VMR7 or VRM9.

Right. Of course this writes in programm at couple place.
What not writes is that it works only on never 3D graphic cards. For instance it works not with Voodoo cards.
But.... EpheMeroN! That option in File menu is not for DVD subtitles, but for subtitles from external, textual subtitle file! I don't know what your 'off a dvd' means here?
Standard DVD subtitles will work on older cards too, just go to Navigate, Subtitle language.
