View Full Version : getting wmp10 to use nero audio decoder for MP3s

some of my mp3 files are mp3pro. so i'd like to use an sbr aware decoder for all of them in wmp10. i tried to change the merits of both filters appropriately (neaudio and l3codecx), even to unregister l3codecx.ax. the player only begins to use nero digital audio decoder for movie files with mp3 sound (tested with avi and mkv files) but not for music files. while at the same time graphedit and all other ds players react properly and switch to using nero decoder for rendering mp3 music files.

so how do i get the darn wmp to do the same?

p.s. i did read that (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=62111&highlight=windows+media+player+mp3pro+nero) old thread on this problem but it all seems quite outdated and not very clear to me. besides some links are not working. i would appreciate if someone could just give a quick up-to-date summary of the solution to this issue.

Unregister all directshow filters, which are responsible for decoding mp3's, so the system has no other choice than to use Nero Audio Decoder.

that certainly works for any other player but not wmp. i've just been experimenting a little more with l3codecx.ax and l3codeca.acm and it appears that it's the acm decoder that wmp10 is using for playback of mp3s. unregistering/moving ax filter doesn't affect wmp's mp3 playback at all. while on the other hand moving the acm file from \system32 causes it to pop up error message (can't find codec). moving acm back to \system32 restores normal playback. and wmp doesn't look for any other alternative decoders in case of absence of the acm, it just stops with the error message.

i hope some registry hack is possible to make wmp default to a different mp3 decoder filter (nero).

WMP has a semi-automatic way of building a filtergraph. If I remember correctly it has some (internal) presets based on the file's extension. It's possible that these are tweakable somewhere in the registry but I seriously doubt so.
