Hello! This is my first post here, so i know almost nothing about audio, video.
Please, sorry for the crap english i might use (as i'm not english :O )
a friend of mine took some cartoons on a VHS to the pc, but the audio is REALLY crap...volume is very high, lots of noises (like something's frying), very high basses... could please someone tell me what plugin/filter I should use?
ps. I can send via pm a very little sample just for let know those who wants to help me how bad it is.

If you want to watch the VHS (ugh!) tape with its crappy audio, then you have to use a high-end audio system with sophisticated features like Dolby NR and Graphic Equaliser. You can then tweak on till you get your desired or near-desired output.
As a newbie myself, I can tell you that tinkering with a VHS source is a waste of time because a look at the calender will tell you that we have moved on to 2005.
And, really, again as a newbie, I can tell you that I have found these fora to be enormously useful if you really participate, which means you've really got to do some readings at a near-constant pace. There are people here with monstrous skills and enormous knowledge; all of them will (surprisingly) stoop to help you only if they feel that you have tried your best first.
Regards.

Does your friend still have the VHS tapes? Chances are he recorded with the audio set too high. It would be much easier to re-record them than to fix it, not to mention some distortion will remain no matter what you try to do.

In that case, you'll have to demux the audio from the file, edit it and remux it. There are plenty of guides here for doing the de/remuxing. I convert the file to WAV, edit it with Cool Edit, convert it to MP3 and remux it.

Okay, here goes. Read this (http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/index.html) guide for preliminary understanding. Capture (http://www.stefanstrobl.at/doom9/ACG41.zip) your VHS video with guidance from Wilbert, and help from this FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=32575) also, then extract and edit (http://www.adobe.com/tips/aud15freqedit/pdfs/aud15freqedit.pdf) your audio to remove noise and artifact using Adobe Audition which is the new name for CoolEdit Pro. After that, put your audio and video back together again in a suitable container, burn to CD.
