View Full Version : Xvid playback players?

It's a newbie question: are all Divx compatible players supposed to read Xvid? I tried on many Dvix certified players such as the Yamaha S557, Philips DVP630, Sony DV-NS32... without success. The only one that succeed is the Samsung DVD-HD745, though the picture freeze sometimes. So what should I know if I want to buy an Xvid player?

Sorry if I missed something, but I was not able to find an answer elsewhere in the forum.

Hi Olv, welcome to the forum...

Playback of any Mpeg4 (XviD, DivX, FFmpeg etc) file in a stand-alone player will depend on how it's been generated.

Every Mpeg4/DVD player should be able to play encodes generated in SP (Simple Profile) mode. But if you have encodes generated using some of the available ASP (Advanced Simple Profile) modes, you'll need to make sure you have a player that's up to the task... meaning a player fitted with a chip-set that's up to the task!

That said, currently no player/chip-set supports XviD encodes generated with (3 warp-point) GMC... so you may need to check the ASP features of your Mpeg4 encodes with an file analysis tool such as GSpot v2.52 beta (http://gspot.headbands.com/gspot252dl.html).

Also, head over to bonds excellent MPEG-4 Information (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=73022) sticky!

Thanks. :)

I forgot to say the Xvid file I tried to read has been generated with AutoGK. I'm a bit confused because no standalone I saw mentioned Xvid compatible, like they mention for Divx. Meanwhile I tried on the new Pioneer DV-380 (i work in an electronic shop...), it works. But, again, nothing is mentionned about Xvid in the manual.

XviD, DivX, 3ivx, FFmpeg etc... it's all Mpeg4.

Like I mentioned earlier you have to check the Mpeg4 streams ASP features and have a player/chip-set that can cope with them!

According to ESS, their Vibratto S, I and II chip-sets can't handle Qpel or GMC
According to Sigma, their EM8475/6, EM8500 and EM8550 range of chip-sets can't handle Qpel

If your encode contains Qpel, you will have to get a player fitted with either, MediaTek MT1389xx range of chip-sets. Zoran's 776 range of chip-sets. Or Sigma's EM856x range of chip-set

The Pioneer DV-380 is fitted with an MediaTek MT1389xx chip-set so it can spin virtually anything - except for XviD's 3 warp-point GMC.

I am able to play XviD files that are generated on autogk on my Avayon player; Avayon is a small startup in Boston.

Olv, just to clarify, SeeMoreDigital is of course correct from a technical standpoint, but the practical reason you don't (nor will you ever likely) see XVID labeld players is that XVID is not a commercial entity. It is an open source project that is (justifiably) very popular, but unlike DivX is not a company that can legally certify devices.

Hope that helps.

Nobody mentioned importance of FourCC codec string inside AVI file. Of course player may be capable of playing XviD encoded video after changing its FourCC to 'DIVX' or 'DX50', but the question is will it recognize 'XVID' string...?

At the end of the day....

...As long as you buy a player that's fitted with a chip-set that can handle ASP (Advanced Simple Profile) features. And you remember to generate encodes "without" 3 warp-point GMC... you should not encounter any playback problems... video codec wise!

SMD - What is the most advanced chipset? And what players use it? I looked for the Pioneer unit here in the US but I think it is a UK only product.

I forgot to mention I want this chipset/player to be able to play movies that are encoded using Nero Digital. After the release of DivX6 tools I think I am moving to Nero Digital or maybe XviD.

If you're thinking of encoding using Recode2 (NeroDigital SP/ASP), you will need a player that supports the .MP4 container, as well as the more popular .AVI container!

Please look at this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=94538).

You could take a look at the OPPO OPDV971H , so far it has played everything i've thrown at it (Divx, Xvid, etc...)

Here's the link to the site : http://www.oppodigital.com/opdv971h.htmlThe specification looks very good. And with the inclusion of an DVI output combined with an well respected up-scaler, makes for a very worthy player indeed :) .

Shame there's no .MP4 container support - so no NeroDigital :(
