View Full Version : Still no option to save last aspect ratio used in MPC :(

Back to Zoom Player :(
I am the author of a media player and I'd be interested to know why you need an option like this?
My player also doesn't save the AR based on the fact that for 95% of files the AR that windows reports is correct. But even when the AR is wrong for one file its not going to be wrong (in the same way) for another so saving the AR would be pointless and more often than not you'd be saving the wrong AR.
Do you view a series of files with the wrong AR or have some oddly AR'd viewing device?

The reason I need it to save the last aspect ratio used is because I use TV out to a widescreen TV that cannot auto switch to a correct ratio via S-Video from the video card (There is no line 21 signal sent and S-Video does not have the correct pin like SCART does to auto switch). So I currently set Zoom Player to 'anamorphic' which pulls the video to correctly fill in a 'fake' anamorphic ratio on the widescreen TV (I leave the TV set to widescreen ratio by default and manually changing it I dislike as it can reveal scan lines when stretching vertically to remove the black bars and getting the correct ratio and even that does not do it correctly for some video).
Zoom Player saves this by default when you exit. MPC does not. I requested it as an option many times over the course of the last 2 years but it's been ignored (Hey it's your time. Your program. Your prerogative. But I like to ask now and then just to see if anything would happen. Heh. Sorry about the pestering).
I've also spoken to another who compiles your CVS to see if he would put it in and he said he might try. However if you did sneak it in at some point I'd be very gratefull! :)
Kind regards.
EDIT Oops! I thought you was the author of MPC. Sorry about that.
No, its not MPC I write.
So your TV is a widescreen CRT? I must admit I've often wondered how AR would work on one of these.
My player is still in testing but I'll add a save AR feature and let you know when its in. You wouldn't mind testing it for me would you?
I'll be doing a new release around Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

I don't mind taking a test drive though to be honest I am happy with Zoom Player. Although my preference would be to use MPC as it has a lot of support for certain video formats inbuilt and is simple to use.

How about "View / Video Frame / Override Aspect Ratio / 16:9"? That'll enforce a 16:9 aspect ratio on everything you view, and it gets saved and used the next time you start MPC (6.4.8.4 here)...

Nope. That only affects the window. Not the TV output overlay.
I've thought about this some more and done the promised release. But I haven't added a save aspect ratio.
There is already a feature that, I think, will do what you want. I'm not entirely sure because its never been tried on a widescreen CRT but it works fine on my 4/3 CRT.
Download YAP free (109K) from http://www.yapsupport.co.uk/download.php there is a nag screen. If this works for you PM me an email address and I'll create you an account so you can grab the non nag version. It only nags when you first run YAP so if you drag and drop files you will be ok.
General Docs http://www.yapsupport.co.uk/YAPDocs/
This is what I think will sort your problem http://www.yapsupport.co.uk/YAPDocs/special.html
I've tried 3 4/3 TV's with 4 different (ATI) graphics cards and all have required calibration. The calibration data is saved so YAP will always do the correction.
You might also like to try YAPFront (23K) from the same download page, its a very very simple frontend program. In fact really its an explorer window with big text so you can read it on TV's. And is 100% free, needs better icons though.
My player also has many advanced features, possibly even some unique ones, they are summarised on the first page of the Docs link above.
Let me know how you get on.

Aspect ratio on your app has no effect on TV out overlay aspect ratio. Similar to MPC's View, Video Frame, Overide Aspect Ratio. Yours works in the same way. MPC has a different menu for Aspect Ratio that does effect TV output overlay's aspect ratio. It appears your application is missing this function.
What video card is this with?
I've just been and verified that in (Overlay) DX7 mode on an ATI 9550 changing aspect ratio's works fine. I don't ever use DX7 mode because the picture quality is awful compared to DX9 but it does work mostly the same way.
I'd have to guess that its something older and made by nvidia?

Nvidia 6600GT AGP. I tried DX7 (Overlay), DX9 and RGB off as well and nothing affects TV out (Except when I turn off RGB in which case it zooms a 2.35:1 ratio movie to some weird hybrid that is not quite 16:9 but is still too stretched to be correct for a 2.35:1 ratio movie).

Did you try 720x576 (PAL) or 720x480 (NTSC) fullscreen modes too? I know YAP works fine on a monitor and on HD TV's hooked up with DVI on nvidia 6800 normal, GT and ultra.
I've arranged to borrow a nvidia 6200 on Monday to investigate this further, hopefully its similar enough your card to show the problem.
I found this http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=5148 don't really know if its related to your problem, does suggest a 6200 will have the same issues as the other nvidia cards.

I output NTSC with resultion set to 1024x768 which is downscaled to NTSC TV out resolution. I know about that old drivers hack with Powerstrip. That is not an issue. MPC and Zoom Player both handle 'fake' anamorphic stretch to TV out. It's just that MPC does not save that setting and it has to be manually set each time. Your app does not seem to do it for some reason. As stated. When I select 16 9 mode in your app it's like going to 'View, Video Frame, Override Aspect Ratio' in MPC which only effects the video playback window aspect not the TV overlay output ratio. MPC has a seperate menu for aspect ratio that does work on TV overlay.
