We are using only macs at work so there's two obvious options for encoding AVC qt7pro and squeeze4.1.

I haven't yet learnt to do these quality tests so is there anywhere comparison between qt7, squeeze4.1 and eg nero or could somebody do that?

Squeeze is nice 'cause it has drop folder and usable GUI, but I've seen quite amounts of noise in my encoding tests.

avc visual comparison samples with sorensons codec can be found here (http://www.heise.de/ct/05/10/146/testsequenzen.shtml), you will have to look at them yourself

x264's version used in this test was pretty old, it should have become better till now (i consider it as being definitely one of the best avc codecs existing)

i think there is surely an option to encode with x264 on the mac, either with videolan or mencoder i assume!?

It is definitely possible to use X264 on Mac. I use it with mencoder, but you could use the x264 cli or any frontend to mencoder (i.e. D-Vision). The only problem is using x264 in an MP4 container... :scared:

Wow, thanks, that test is pretty extensive!
Only thing missing is qt7...

We would use this compressing with research material within a research group in a university, so that's why I'm looking for as easy as possible usability, so I think using cli commands is out of question.

It would be too much of waste of resources for me to learn how to use cli based compressor, going through all the switches, installing needed things for the others, teaching them how to use them and after all they would just use qt7pro, because "it's easier".

So, we need an easy GUI or "drop folder".

Thanks giandrea, I will look that D-Vision up!

Is there somewhere at least nearly as good comparison between qt7 and x264 than that c't's?

Well, D-vision supports only dvd ripping, not qt movs or dv(cpro50) material.
It's so funny that almost all of these "freeware" apps are done to encode someone elses content, not your own...

I am sorry, but I am quite sure that D-Vision supports not only DVD, but any video source that is playable by MPlayer (almost everything, included RealVideo, excluded WMV9).

Well, if you just launch d-vision 3, it will tell you at startup that it does not support .mov or .dv. Can I trust that?

OK, perhaps you are right about MOV and DV, but this is a limitation of D-Vision that could be removed in future versions, because MPlayer handles really well both of them.

Contact the author about the issue, anyway I think you can work around this by muxing the DV stream in an AVI container or the VOB in an MPG container and then using the "Recode AVI/MPG" Tool.

It's the author itself how says when you launch the program, that .mov and .dv support has been removed, because it didn't work in previous versions.

Anyway, I think we are going to use qt7 and perhaps Compressor, because qt7's AVC's quality looks pretty good, PSNRs are close to Nero and quality is much better than with squeeze, which also crashes from time to time.
