I set the subtitle y-pos at 400. there are two y-pos settings; use the defaults" first should be -1; ext-sub should be 400.

Also, make sure your player is set to display the correct subtitle track and cycle through the subs; maybe it is assigned to an odd track for some reason.

Yeah, did that - Std Y-Pos -1, Ext Y-Pos 400. I left the default of -1 in the subtitle pop up that after you click convert. still no subtitles. My player supports SVCD subtitles - cycled through all 4 - nothing.

Although many standalone players support SVCD subs, some do not comply exactly with the specifications and only support CVD subs on SVCD.

Check your subs tab. Whichever is checked - SVCD or CVD, swap for the other and try again.

I suggest you check your player's SVCD/VCD subs compatibility with the images found here

http://www.vcdimager.org/pub/vcdimager/examples/test_svcd/

if you find out your player supports svcd subs in any form but you can't make it work with D2S, consider adding the subtitles as described in guides such as the following

Well, I downloaded the file, burned it onto a CD. Movie played fine. I think it was "Top Gun". No subtitles. My JVC model XV-S502 displays the icon to select subtitles just like the manual shows. Well, I went through them all, but no subtitles displayed. The CD's I burned have an extra folder: EXTRA.
In that folder is a file: SVCDINFO.txt shown below. It says I've got subtitles, but I don't see them. What is going on here ?

I may have found the problem: Nero burning software doesn't support SVCD subtitles. This wouldn't occur to me since I would expect that whatever binary data is in the cue/bin files, so if that gets burned ont a CD, anything in those files would be burned onto the CD. Guess it's not that simple. Anybody know if that's likely my problem ? What CD burning software should I use ? Any good CD burning software free ? Anybody know the site where I can download it ? Thanks.

there are several images there, with combinations of PAL/NTSC and SVCDsubs/CVDsubs. I'd try them all on the player if I were you, at least one containing cvdsubs and one containing svcdsubs. The burning program you use to burn an image(bin/cue etc) is not likely to affect whether you can see svcdsubs or not, but if you want my recommendation for an image burning program in general, it's definitely alcohol (for data i use recordnowmax 4.51, i don't like the bloated, non dvd-standard compliant nero).

In any case, if you can't view the subtitles on the downloadable samples your player most probably doesn't support them, even though an icon is there (such cases exist). A firmware upgrade might remedy that... search google and vcdhelp's dvd player list
