Hi. I have encoded several movies using the tutorials on this site into XVid 1.0.3 format. The encoding is no problem. I use the XVid codec itself to decode the files. There is no problem enciding the files. However, during playback, the movie sort of "skips a beat" at regular intervals, the sound continues but the playback is out of synch for some time and later corrects itself. This happens at regular intervals and I am sure the movie file itself is intact. I play the files from the hard drive directly, so a faulty optical drive is ruled out. Somebody please help me fix this.
My system is an Athlon XP 2200+ running on 512MB RAM on a cheapy motherboard. However, there sufficient system resources when the movie is played back. CPU overheating is not a problem as I checked that. Thanks.

This thing used to happen to me when I used DivX files in the DivX player. You can try upgrading your DirectX to 9.0c, your WMP to v10, or use some other media player like the excellent Media Player Classic or the different VideoLAN Player (http://www.videolan.org/mirror.html?mirror=ftp://f33r.net/&file=vlc/0.8.1/win32/vlc-0.8.1-win32.zip) which does not use DirectX.

"Regular intervals" sounds like a background task consuming resource. Perhaps you have a service that starts up regularly -- for example, every 5 minutes -- to do something? These can be virus scanners, windowsupdate checkers ... that sort of task.

Hi. I have a fully patched windows XP2 machine. I strongly suspect this to be the ForecastFox plugin for Firefox. Plus, I have the firefox pre-loader software running in the background. I will disable the firefox preloader and see if that changes anything. Thanks.

This interests those using FireFox like me. Please keep us informed of your research, will you?

My pleasure!! I think it is forecastfox. Yesterday, while watching a movie, the internet conection went off all of a sudden (My ISP had a problem). The video didn't freeze then. I realized that this morning when I was informed about the service interruption via an email. I will however, watch a movie with firefox unloaded and let you know what happens. Thanks.
