Thanks.. There *will* however be a few quirks in the beginning and I beg you all to bear with the fact that we/I can't do everything right from the start but at least our intentions are good and we will try to do our best in fixing the problems as they show up. ;)
This is gonna take some getting used to...

This is a very nice look. The new and improved doom9.
As with everything doom9, there are always refinements and improvements being made. That is why doom9 is the premier international website that it is. :D

No, I'm not bitching. It does look nice. Only it gives a feeling of less functionality, more flashiness and more ornamentality; if y'know what I mean. I'm sure it's just a feeling that comes with all new things. I'm sure there are good points galore, too, for example a wider assortment of smilies to choose from, among many others.
The uneasiness will pass away, sooner than we think.

The only thing I noticed so far - You can collapse forums ie minimize forums you never visit, but I'm sure there a few more new features (for users and moderators).

also is it posible to increase the width of the codewindow. It is not fun to have a 20 inches monitor if the code window is only half the width of the post so you have to scroll to see the entire content.
Else a nicer but more difficult to get an overview of the threads but that might come when I get used to it.

Ouch, "Forum Rules" are now back online. The "buddy list" is in your UserCP, although I have to admit that I never use it so I can't tell if this is a 'downgrade' or not and I'm not sure about the "Forum Moderators" list... Do you mean the "View Forum Leaders"-link at the bottom?

I'm not so much a fan of the icons (not enough contrast imho.. especially on the frontpage).. so if you have any working alternatives I'd be willing to consider.
As far as the general look goes... a lot of the layout is predetermined by the features vbb3 offers.. you can't just have the old look back. And in my personal experience every major change takes some getting used to.. when your favorite newspaper or magazine goes through a new layout phase, you are likely to be less than pleased but you'll get used to it eventually. I, too, am still in the getting used to phase but knowing what extra features I get in return, I'm all game.

As I said earlier, I don't like this new look at all. In fact, ever since it got online, I haven't been able to browse forums much since this new look makes reading posts very diffucult. I was hoping that the makeover would be a good occasion to improve the search engine. But it's just as bad as before. Is it just me?
The search engine is practically useless. Not just because it won't let you search small (but yet quite distinctive) words like "HC", but because it will point you to a form, and if there's 200 posts on that forum, well good luck dude! You're going to have to look through every single page of that to find what you're looking for. I really dislike that.
Am I missing something?
I've seen other forums (most notably videohelp) where the search engine points you to specific posts in a thread. Much more useful if you ask me...
But OK, the new look is goood. It's a nice change, we'll have to get use to it, but it looks better, no doubt in my mind...

Trust me, the change IS for the better... Or at least for us to be able to make things better...
#1: The search-engine is set at 3 lettersminimum due to performance. It takes ~9 hours to rebuild the index as of now and if we were to decrease the minimum from 3 chars to 2, well... But there's now a possibility to add 'special words' that will be included even though they are shorter ('DV' is now a searchword) so maybe we should add HC too.
#2: If you use the 'advanced search' there's an option (which has been there for a long time) "Show Results as" that you can set to Posts... This will give you the result you're looking for.
(Oh, and a search for hc* will result in every post using any word starting with hc... :) )

First, I have to agree with Sirber. While I like the look, I hate the wasted vertical space that leaves you with less viewable at once. That's minor though and I think you can set custom CSS in Firefox to fix that.
Second, the entire CSS is being put in every single page, which results in 5KB of wasted bandwidth for every single page load. Common practice is to place all of the CSS that is common for every page into a single .css file that is loaded in header. This way the 5KB is downloaded once, and then just loaded from cache. 5KB per page view can add up quickly, and be real annoying for anyone on dialup. Another benefit is that you can have multiple layouts for different situations by just adding a link to another file in the header, like a compressed layout for PDA's.
Just dump all of the CSS infor from the header into a file like doom9.css and add something like this to the header.
<link rel="stylesheet" title="Default" media="screen" href="/doom9.css" type="text/css"/>

I've seen other forums (most notably videohelp) where the search engine points you to specific posts in a thread. Much more useful if you ask me...I'll check if we can't make this the default even for the quicksearch.. pointing to a thread is useful if the thread is under two pages, but anything above it is a major pain in the ass. Fortunately I only use the advanced search anyway and there you have the "search by post".
too bright, did the old forum used to be this white?Actually, yes it did. We're using the exact same colorscheme. But, because of the low contrast of the icons on the frontpage, it gives you the illusion of being a lot brighter. But it really isn't.. I've been going back and forth from old to new to make sure I got all the colors right and they do match.

"Printable Version" Is under the Thread tools in each thread. I don't know what you mean by "Show all Pages". If you mean that a thread should be shown on one page.. you can configure the number of posts to be shown per page in your user control panel.. but the number is limited for performance and bandwidth reasons (it makes no sense to load a MB worth of data if you're only going to read 3 posts).

agreed to keep it.. because (like vcdhelp) its original, and has a sort
of return-beecon effect. Those of you that come back here often, know
what I mean.. you just keep coming back.
Now that I have gotten past the older habbits and moved onward, I thought
I would post what I find to be revisable, when you get the time to do so.
I think that you've been swamped with many requests to fix this and that,
and so on, and so forth.., so when you get the chance, below are what I
found to catch my eye's attention..
-- - -- - --
Here are a couple of things I noticed.., if you could find the time to
look into it in your busy schedule.
* main page, at bottom. All users are non-alphabetized, and (I miss the
bold type for mods. Can you sort these, and bold the mods,
please. (in the old, they used to be)
* Quick Reply does not seem to being working for me. It says to press
one of the buttons to activate it, but they act as if they are grayed out
or disabled.
* At work, in IE v6, the pop-ups (yellow balloon) to new topics are
readable, but here at home, in my Opera browsers, they do no show up, and
only the URL address does. My Netscape v7.1 works fine, but only in one
line (instead of the blocks size, of 1 to 10 lines of text) Also, in
Netscape, the line-feeds are seen as double black bars ::
However, at vcdhelp forum, they're balloon pop-ups work with every new
topic. Yes, I throught strange too.
If you could look into these when you get the chance.
Last.. thank you (all) for your hard work in maintaining the forums.

How do we get a specific post number if we want to setup a link to that in another post?
Update: I think I found a minor workaround. Each post in a thread holds a # in right corner. This is the post count #. If you click on it, you'll get the post address. The only thing is that what if the user wants to continue to peruse through the rest of the thread?

@ 2cool
Just point your mouse over the #nnn, (it will highlight to yellow) giving you
the URL address to any given post.
Example:

You see the orange square icon above/left to you, you would right-click it
and select copy short-cut/link. that doesn't seem to be avaliable now.

jeanl Well, I never did entered it by hand "keystrokes" but I did right-click copy the post # and pasted. So, technically, it didn't use my hand, just the mouse. ;) But either way, it's not a easy to go about it. There should be a work-around guide on doing this if Swede doesn't have a hack. :p

You didn't get it ??
Ok. Here it is then..
* Hover your mouse over the Quick Reply icon (bottom right, to your post,
or other post in question)
* remembering the last 6 digit numbers and copy the url link
* delete everything after org/ and replace with the following new
text (and your number) like this:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=662665#post662665 (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=662665#post662665)
Note the showthread.php?p=; underline; and the #post; and your
number, nnnnnn
Anytime you need to refer to another post elsewheres, just remember
this layout, and the number to the post (right click the #nnn)
(Some browsers will show a balloon tip w/ the url addr while others will
show only on status line (look below) and while others might not display
it at all, and you have to copy/paste it.
Until a fix can be made, this is the best alternative, if you need to
point to another post, but have other posts (top/bottom) continue it.
After a while, it will be second nature and less combersome.. at least
till it can be revised in our favor.

I had to reset my password to login after the update, no idea why really.
Anyway, I'm indifferent about the look of it. Haven't tried searching yet, but obviously that is very important. I must be old school for disliking all the font/color/size options. But then maybe that was all in the previous version only I never noticed. I chose my browser font, size, and color for a reason-- readability. I'm all for allowing people to emphasize a point, but how many ways do we need for doing that? I guess that isn't the fault of the forum, but rather the poster who thinks being "different" is a good thing. I for one, tend to tune out such posts.

Is under the Thread tools in each thread.
Thanks !

But, its not always convenient to view one post, (even when a user
points or references it) in another post. Why ? Because sometimes
(though usually in most cases) the refrence requires *full* reading.
This usually starts from the point of reference, and downward. In most
cases, the user who references/points to another place in a forum area,
might expect that the user read from *that* point onward to get to a
point of understanding the conversation or topic at that time. There
may be a ton of missed reading and the user might miss out, if only to
be referenced to one post, and then jumps back to the original post.
Its sort of a step backwards, IMO.
I'm sorry if I can't put it in cleaner words :(
Well, I'm tire, good night.

#1: It's not alphabetized due to server-resources. But I'm keeping an eye on the server loads and if the new version doesn't drain the memory or CPU I might turn it back on. But you won't get the bold mods back, it's just too many queries as it is and the indexpage is the most viewed.
#2: You have to press the button next to 'Quote', that's the 'quick'-button.
#3: I agree, strange... I'll keep it in mind.

There's a new feature in vBulletin 3.x that allows us admins to state a MINIMUM of characters in a post (excluding the quote). If you don't have more to say than 'Yes', 'No' or 'Yup', then you might consider not posting at all ;)
Currently I've set that minimum to 5 chars but this might change in the future.

Let me make one thing clear: This 'look-and-feel' is nothing that we've been aiming for... It's just that we *really* needed to upgrade the forum software. The visual 'enhancements' are mearly a bi-product.. When things have calmed down we might/will change it. :)
Yeah, nice work m8! :)
All: Please remember that this is only one style/skin. The major news is that it's a new forum code with shitloads of more functions and possibilities, among them, easy installation of skin-packages.
I suggest that the Crew selects a few skins that they like, and install them so that the users can select their own preference... maybe one that looks more like the 2.xx style to quiet some mouths ;)

My personal biggest problem is that there is no space between text and signature. Even for very short post, there is post + signature + space after them.
I was trying different things and I don't seem to be able to find css that would align the lower div to the bottom....
Anyway, I partially solved that by adding this to my userContent.css:
td.alt1 > div + div {
margin-top: 3em;
}
This, unfortunately, makes large posts even longer. The code would be easier if some "proper" markup was used, of course (how about putting titles into <h6> rather than <div>.......) ;)

wow, look at the space below my sig. BIG EMPTY.Actually.. look at the left side of each post.. you have username, title, avatar, join date, location, number of posts, and a bunch of icons.. they all use space. So, a one liner post, by a user having no signature but an avatar, the "user info" part of the post determines the vertical length of the post, the post will look empty but that's because avatar and co take up all the vertical space.. we can't just make the avatar disappear just to reduce the vertical space used...
And then there's the 3 buttons at the bottom right.. they cannot be at the same position as the signature, so they are placed below. Put that all together and you'll understand why each post looks the way it looks.

I don't have Opera 8 but if you're interested if some website is only looking bad for you or others too you can use www.browsershots.org (http://www.browsershots.org).
I'm sure the author will add Opera 8 soon.
