View Full Version : Unreferenced flowers?

I often wondered about the significance of these flowers that I found in a few commercial DVDs. They are commonly unreferenced and with no buttons. Though, I have came across other variations in the past, here's one example (http://img198.echo.cx/my.php?image=simbaspridevmgm192tv.png) of what I'm talking about. I found these in Lion King II - Simba's Pride (Region 1), VMGM 19.

Perhaps, others would like to post their findings here too?
Update: Above flowers can be found on these DVDs too.

I first spotted these mystery flowers on DVDs a number of years ago. They seem to be found on most Disney DVDs, but after more spelunking they have also been discovered on other studio discs. It's a mystery how these flowers can survive on a DVD, since they are almost always in total darkness and don't have a water supply.
But seriously ... best guess is that this is some sort of easter egg or watermark that the programmers put in some of their authoring programs.

And, well known, are the "Spruce menus", where the root menu of every VTS has an ad (that never gets played).
Never seen the flowers before. Very nice.

Are you talking about a literal picture of flowers? I've seen these. I've always assumed they were supposed to be 'innocent' little things to play back when child protection or whatever was turned on. I know I've seen them when backing up my "Nightmare Before Christmas" DVD.

I think I saw another unreferenced BMP which was a picture of a piano's keys under a dim glow. When I happened upon it again, I'll post it.

Yes, now that you've posted a pic I can say that's definitely on the R1 "Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas" special edition. Don't have it handy at the moment to give you the locale(s), but as I recall it was on there several times.

Bizarre..... . Maybe they are some kind of filler, something that is referenced from somewhere to check if a DVD is original or copy - if flowers won't get copied.
I have seen this several times and they did get copied with DVD Shrink with the DVD I had. I always thought they were some sort of watermark.
I still ended up still imaging them.

Aren't these used as filler to ensure the 32k gap?
Beside the flowers and spruce logo, I've seen unreferenced gray screen and color bars on Dutch releases.

Flowers spotted in Chinatown, Paramount R1, VTSM 1/3/4, 2 - yeah, I'm bored…

I've seen quite a few of these too. These flowers are automatically - most likely - put by an authoring software, usually in VTSM (root menu). It has no significance.

If they're only in menu vob files, then that suggests a theory. Could they be there just as filler to ensure the file is >=32K?

That could be the reason.
I usually just hide or delete it and enable 32k gap. I know it's redundant in terms of doing this step and total dvd size, but I just like it clean. :D
