sorry for the extreme ignorance but....
i'm having a problem backing up my dvd's in divx form. i use dvd decryptor in ifo mode to decode the movie, then i use auto gk to encode it into divx. the resulting video looks good but there is never any sound. am i missing an option or a step or something. any advice is much appreciated.
thanks.

PLEASE :logfile: so we can know what is really happening. That is, hoping that you had selected the input audio in AutoGK before encoding.
Also, when you decrypted the DVD in IFO mode, you had selected the audio stream as below?

thanks for the replys guys. i have some new ideas to try, and if things don't work out, i'll be sure to post the log files. i just wasn't sure what program was hanging me up.
in the faq it mentions that you need the latest ac3 filters? i thought ac3 was pretty standard for an audio format... maybe i'll just try variable bit rate mp3 insted

Doh! So your audio stream is AC3 and you don't even have an AC3 decoder installed? Good catch jggimi, I didn't think it might be something as basic as that.:o
@minofifa, AC3 is a common format, but Windows doesn't support it natively. You need to have this (http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/ac3filter/ac3filter_0_70b.exe) or this (http://cutka.szm.sk/files/ffdshow-20050303-sse.exe) installed.

pardon my ignorance one more time but...
is the main reason to use AC3 for quality purposes? Say that i use AC3 to encode my movies, will i have to have the ac3 filters installed on any computer that i want to watch the movie on? or is just for the encoding process? it would seem that using mp3 format would make life easier.

Hi-
is the main reason to use AC3 for quality purposes?
Yes, that and for the surround sound if you have a system that can play back DD 5.1.
Say that i use AC3 to encode my movies, will i have to have the ac3 filters installed on any computer that i want to watch the movie on?
Yes, of course, since it doesn't come pre-installed with Windows. It's a simple matter to get and configure the filter, though.
or is just for the encoding process?
It has nothing to do with the encoding. It's taken from the DVD untouched and added back into the video during the muxing process after the video is encoded.

@minofifa, Seeing that you are hesitant about AC3, do you want to give MP3 Surround (http://www.iis.fraunhofer.de/amm/download/mp3surround/index.html) a whirl?
No decoder needed + It is 5.1 + Muxes fine into AVIs.
