Hi!

I have made my self a mediapc and are going to backup my dvd to hd.
My mediapc is connected to my widescreen tv by vga-port on pc and tv.
when I use my tv in pc-mode, I only have 2 screen-modes:4:3 and 16:9

I use dvd-ripper and autogk to rip and make avi-files.
My problem is I cannot get the ascpect ratio to look right.
When I use 4:3 the a/r is ok, but the picture is small, wtih black bars at the side.
When I use 16:9, the picture is just streched in the width.

How can I get the A/R right, so I can use the benefit of my widescreen tv?

Sounds like your PC is outputting a 4:3 resolution. 4:3 resolutions include 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, etc.

Change it to a 16:9 resolution if your video card supports it.

What resolution are you currently using?

Any one which aspect ratio is 16:9 (1.78)
1024x576 or 848x480, for instance

Other common widescreen resolutions would be 1680x1050 and 1920x1200.

What video card do you have? Most integrated motherboards do not support widescreen.

Another problem might be the analog VGA. I believe Windows needs DVI to display widescreen, but don't quote me on that. DVI would also provide a much better picture as no analog conversion would be needed. Does you TV also have DVI?

Edit: Read here, this guy had the same question.

Dunno, but wouldnt anamorphic playback solve this problem ???

16:9 Source -> Stretch to 4:3 -> TV scales it back to 16:9
