I have a .mkv film that i want to burn to dvd so that i can play it in a stand alone player, is there a way of doing it.

You can use Avi2Dvd, it automatically converts avi, ogm, mkv to (S)VCD/DVD.

Dunno if it's relevent, but .mkv files can be written on DVD blanks in Data Mode.
