Can you really get positive results burning Dvd's to an external drive via USB 2.0?

Before I take the plunge and buy an external drive enclosure, I want
to be sure it is not a pipedream... due to transfer speed limitations, etc.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

usb 2.0=480mbit/s
I don't think the drive can burn that fast if it's external..

I have a Freecom external burner USB 2, and it burns up to 12x. Never had any problems with copies burnt at that speed. Use Verbatim advanced azo blanks packed as up to 8x, but goes up to 12x in some drives, like my freecom.
