View Full Version : When to apply denoise filter

Hi all:

I have a capture of a sports event done from VHS, done with the MJPEG codec and with the "2 fields" option checked. Being VHS, there is a bit of noise, and I have had success eliminating it with VirtualDub and the Dynamic Noise Reduction filter (testing first in a short part of the complete capture). What I'd like to know is: for best results, should I deinterlace before applying the filter to the entire clip? Ideally I would like to leave it interlaced, since the end result will go to a DVD to be viewed on "normal" TVs, but I don't know if the interlacing will affect the filter or not.

(And the same question goes for the other filter I want to apply: the one to eliminate the bottom 10 lines or so of garbage).

Have you seen section 7.2.11 of the Capture Guide (http://www.doom9.org/capture/start.html)?

Oooh, look at that. I spent a few hours reading that part of the guide, but only the section about removing artifacts; I didn't think of scrolling that far down... ;)

Anyway, here goes another question: in the case that I had to deinterlace, where can I find the deinterlaceMAP filter for Virtualdub? The link in the guide goes to digtv.ws, which from what I see has been taken by one of those domain hijackers, and I can't find it at neuron2.net. (Or could I just use the default deinterlacer that comes with Virtualdub?

Good question... I couldn't find it by googling. I'm going to move this thread to the Vdub forum where there may be someone with an answer for you on that question.
