Hello and welcome to the forum-

Well, that question is poorly worded, as most AVIs are neither 4:3 nor 16:9, but 1:1. But that's OK. That's why this is the Newbie Forum.

Are you asking how to convert a Fullscreen AVI to a Widescreen AVI, or, put another way, a 1.33:1 AVI to 1.78:1 AVI? There are 2 ways, pretty much. One would be to crop off the top and bottom of the AVI to make it widescreen, and the other would be to add black bars to the right and left sides to make it widescreen. I recommend neither, as to make the change permanent, reencoding would be required, which would only degrade the video quality. Besides, you can use software to do what you want when playing it (on a computer anyway).

But we'd really need more information. What's the final destination; another AVI, or a DVD. Why do you want to butcher the original aspect ratio?

Hi-

Sure, Gordian Knot can do it easily. Here are some guides for the various containers/codecs it supports:

http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm

If you're not sure which to reencode to, XviD and DivX5 are perhaps the most popular. Open the AVI in GKnot, and the Resolution Tab is where you do your cropping (converting from Full to Widescreen) and resizing. If you need more help, come back.

Auto Gordian Knot is actually much easier to use, but you'll have to access the Hidden Options to tell it that you want to crop it. Here's that guide (comes with it) telling how to do it in the Hidden Options. If you decide to use AutoGK for the job, I think I would first open the AVI in GKnot to find out how much to crop, and then enter those figures in the Hidden Options of AutoGK.

Good luck.

Being a newby myself, I'd be prepared for the nasty surprise of having all the circles turned into eggs, and all the people becoming thinner and taller like beings from another planet with a low gravity.

Hi-

Is that a polite way of saying I gave him bad advice, ukb008? You had me worried for a minute, but I opened an AVI in GKnot and did some crop testing, and the resolution adjusted as I went. The only thing you have to keep an eye on is the Aspect Error.

Wait...now maybe I see what you're saying. Are you saying that the resolution won't get adjusted if using AutoGK? Since I've never used AutoGK for that (actually I've never converted fullscreen AVI to widescreen AVI), then I'm not sure, but you may be right about that. So, I guess I'd have to amend the advice to say use GKnot for the job, and not AutoGK.

Thanks for the correction (if that's what you meant).

What I have found in these fora is that all the mods are sane, knowledgeable, patient, responsible and willing to help. You are, of course, no exception. Particularly, celebrated as you are regarding your passion for the widescreen, you have always given impeccable advice on the subject.

And you are right. GKnot is the one program I'd use if I were to lose my mind and wish to convert a widescreen film into fullscreen; no offence, of course, intended to fullscreen lovers.

Regards.
