k well i followed doom9's guide to convert a mpeg captured dvb-t source to xvid avi. everything went ok, but i don't think it's ok using 4 programs, one of which uses another two in teh process (gordian knot).

is there no program like auto gk for dvds that does everything automatically.

Yes, there is , ... capture directly on fly to .avi and .mp3.

ah but the software i have doesn't do that so i have to convert after. the only option in thesoftware is mpeg2 ts and mpeg2 ps.

write a script that will automate the process
you can use tools that all have cli's

not really that good at computers though. how would i go about writing a script? i've done some visual basic before if that helps.

the thing i don't understand is how to tell it what the settings are for each program.

Try to build with GraphEdit your own graph.
Start as follows:
When capturing, run GraphEdit and go to FILE > Connect to Remote Graph

...and present this picture here on forum

right, well thats if you really wanna encode on the fly..
but what kind of pc do you have and what kind of quality are you looking may be determining factors here..

well i downloaded graphedit and installed it by running register.bat. i set up the tv software to capture, ran graphedit and clicked on connect to remote graph but the list is empty (says "select a remote filter graph to view") but the list is emtpy even when i refresh it.

my pc is an A64 1.8ghz 1gig pc3200 ram, 240gig hard disk.

i'm not exactly sure what quality i want. i don't need anything amazingly detailed but i've got a 20" widescreen monitor and i want to be able to watch it on it easily. the size of the files isn't really a problem, but i don't want overkill and don't want crap quality as if it's been filmed in the cinema.

Run GraphEdit when capturing

Please describe your capturing way

i did run it when capturing.

i started my tv software (it's just called DVBT), chose a tv channel, and pressed record.

did i misunderstand what i should be capturing?

I too was sick of using 4 or 5 different programs, so I wrote an interface for MEncoder designed for DVBT recordings.

nothing really useful to add, but wanted to test the new forum!

@nexx: thats exactly the type of thing i have, and a lot of others who want to streamline the process - but, depending on your needs, i think two things could be added to improve DVBMenc (nice by the way):
i. cutting ability to remove ads - but i know that you would have to rewrite the entire program as this would change the function of it from being more or less a gui to a heavy weight .. but this is the main hinderence to me personally when i record dvb
ii. a "watch-folder" technique à la sorenson squeeze - so it could encode whenever a recording was finished, if (i) wasn't implemented

just think they could be useful and (ii) at least is easy to incorporate

@rudeboymcc: is this or some kind of batch file the type of thing you're looking for?

Ac3Dc3,
Interesting ideas. I'm unsure of mplayer's ability to cut out ads reliably but I shall look into that and the second issue. (in a few weeks when i finish uni)

Check out comskip:

note:
the attached downloads are not recent so I recommend grabbing the trunk from SVN. there is a precompiled version in the trunk.

i think you also need the .ini and .dictionary files.
