I'm probably the last one figured this out and using a sucky old version. The GraphEdit version that comes with the latest dshow sdk (included in the platform sdk) has support for favorites which make it much more practical.
Note: if you have problems with the property pages regsvr32 the proppage.dll found in the GrapEdit dir.
