Just because this is the Newbie forum doesn't mean that you neglect the 'Search' facility here.

Please :search:

It doesn't look good to see the same thing being asked and answered countless times. Search, find, try it and THEN ask if you have any questions.

Yeah, sorry but i have run some searches. Could you advise me of how to get the textsub.vdf file out of vobsub and into virtualdubmod. It doesn't show up in the filters list and i have put it into the plugins folder, i just get the message that it isn't a valid system 32 file, the textsub file i have is 0 kb on examination. Cheeers and feel free to bollock me anytime.

There's obviously something wrong with the textsub file.

Right, i cracked it. I downloaded avimuxgui and dragged and dropped the avi and the subtitle files into it, generated the new file and saved it, simpler than i thought, didn't have any synch problems at all. You will need vobsub or the vsfilter to play it back though. There was no re-encoding involved so the file size is more or less the same as the original. Now when i burn this to dvd will the subtitles show up?

They will on a PC (with vobsub installed), but not on a standalone DVD player.

Ok so i open up the video in vdubmod then filters and textsub and open up the subtitle file. I can now see my subtitles in the right hand screen, do i now have to re-encode the whole avi,i don't want to lose quality?

You do, and you will.
That's what you get for buying a standalone that doesn't support external subtitles :p
