when are filters applied?

My video source is clean and clear but after I compress it, it of course gets some artifacts. If I apply some smoothing filters and use that .avs file as input to compress with xvid, are they applied before or after each frame is compressed?

And think about it, your COMPRESSING.... you get artifacts. You gotta lose sompin, you know?

Also, if you write a script, the commands closer to the top are applied before the commands lower down. That's how the command chain works. :D

They are of course applied before they're sent to the encoder (ie before they get compressed).
