View Full Version : How do I encode with XviD?
Hey all...
I'd like to know how everyone gets their encoded files to a reasonable size (150MB~180MB), while the length is about 25 minutes, with excellent quality? Sure, it depends on the source, but still.
What settings should I set to get a resonable size with a very good quality on VirtualDub? It looks so complex, with all those parameters. Any worthwhile guide/tutorial? I'd like to be an encoding expert, I'd like to know how to take advantage of all those XviD features, options, settings... ;)
Thanks in advance!

Start from here, it is a very good FAQ for beginners

And this one, of course :)

of course these are the best guides:

;)
Thanks! Anything else I should know?

You may also want to look at some beginner's tools for encoding in XviD, e.g: AutoGK. This (http://autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=TutorialEN) guide is very good.
Thanks, unskinnyboy... But, my source is another digital video file, not DVD, all I do is add subtitles to it (SSA, ASS, whatever). Can I still use AutoGK? Or do I have to use VirtualDub, or just GK?

What is the format of your digital video file source? AutoGK takes DV files and lately, even AVI. No MPEG-1 support or support for containers like OGM, MKV & MP4 yet. For that we can recommend other tools.
OK, so for AVIs I can use AutoGK (or GK), what should I use for MKV/OGM? I guess I'll need to handle them in the future sometime.
Also, say I'd just like to be an encoding ''expert'', getting my encodes perfect (or nearly, if possible), besides XviD, do I need to, or should I, use any filters, or something like that?
Thanks, and sorry about my ignorance.

Filters: Depends on source. Search the Avisynth Section.
mkv: use mkvtoolnix or graphedit
OGM: OGGMUX
Good luck in your research.

You can always use mkvtoolnix (http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/win32/mkvtoolnix-unicode-1.4.2-setup.exe) to convert any avi to mkv.
...do I need need, or should I, use any filters, or something like that?
Yes you do. Sometimes. Check out www.avisynth.org for all needed docs regarding this matter. It may seem complicated at a glance, but actually it isn't. I personally got used to it very quickly by starting modifying GK-created scripts. Then I've looked through several manuals of different filters, understood how to use them, and now I'm writing the scripts manually. Usually 3 or 4 filters is enough to enhance visual impression, depending on the film.
So, here we go mate.
Have fun and good luck to you!
ChronoCross - I think you're exactly the guy I need. ;- )
Because what I'm going to do is encode anime video files (MKV, OGM, or AVI), to AVI(mainly). That's why I'm asking those questions, and I'm just a n00b at this, I don't know a thing.
Leo 69 - Thanks! But actually when I said that I'll probably sometime need to handle MKV/OGM, I meant that I will sometime need to convert these to AVIs. Not vice versa (maybe, sometime, but let's just say it's MKV/OGM/AVI to AVI).
So, from my reply to ChronoCross, you might have figuered out already I'm going to encode anime videoes. Are there any scripts you can recommend, any good tutorials for AVISynth (besides the ones on the official site)? Any additional information I might need to know?
Thanks guys, it's really appreciated and helpful! :)

I've been chatting with him in pm for about a week now and he's pretty much looking for a perfect premade avisynth script as well as codec settings for anime. If he read any of the guides he would have a pretty good idea of where to start but since he doesn't feel like reading and I wouldn't tell him exactly how to do everything he stopped pm'ing me.
That's true, I haven't read anything yet... but that's the level before the reading, you know. Well, I think I've got enough sources for my reading... eh... OK, so, thanks everyone! (Arnold Schwarzenegger's accent); I'll be back.
