I have a 50-minute .wmv file captured via firewire, with a problem. Detail: source is DV camcorder, Windows Movie Maker is doing the capture, converting to a mid-level WMV format on the fly. WMM seemed to hang towards the end of the cap, and I crashed the prog to regain control. The file now exists, about the right size and all, but won't open. I tried ULead Video Studio 7 to open it, and I get an error message "File [filename] is not editable. File is not indexed." Thinking this might be windows XP Pro indexing problem, I turned that off. Didn't help. Any clue as to what that error message might mean, or how to fix it (short of recapturing)? THANKS.

Its certainly doesnt have to do anything with WinXP's document indexing service. Broken AVI files usually have damaged index - and some players and tools can rebuild it (partially?).
But you are talking about WMV, I dont know of any tool that can fix WMV files as VD can with AVI files. But you may want to look if the WM Encoder can somehow open it and repair it.

Though I think you're best off recapturing it.
