I have encoded a dvd to DIVX with very good quality picture but very low audio volume, the audio was encoded with lameMP3. When i isolate the audio and try to run it through mp3gain i only get a file about 27 minutes long. Have i missed something here. Any help would be great.
Peace
Try it with besplit, see Q3 of the MP3 FAQ and Q5 of the MP2 FAQ.
If you have some experience with GraphEdit try below solution.
It is simple rewrite from one .avi file to another .avi file operation.

eb Thanks for your suggestion, but please note that this method reencodes the audio, resulting in a substantial quality loss.

Thx Kpex, you are right, but... I can't agree that losses will be substantial, as we discussed already, it is possibility to enrich the sound. Beside this, it is very good occasion to learn about GraphEdit.
Using sliders insted commands it is instant and more pleasant way to get required effects. For me it is in some sense come back to analog knobs, sliders. Like I hate this good quality small metal speakers in comparison to big solid and heavey wooden ones.

EDIT
As example using AC3Filter sliders I can virtualy displace my front or rear speakers by inch or meters on live hearing.
