I love AutoGK, I think it's great but there was just a couple of things I wanted to change. There wasn't any option to allow me to force a certain bitrate and I wanted it to be more 'standalone' friendly.
So I've sort of started making a new program which works on the same lines but is very very beta, not finished properly at all but if people want to help me out with suggestions and have a mess with it I can release it here if anyone wants me too.
Not sure what actual forum section to use but I've posted it here because it's only XviD at the moment.
1. My program will NEVER use VBR for MP3.
2. My program will NEVER split the files.
3. I'm trying to get it so all output will play in all standalone players.
Would using H.263 for say bitrates lower than a 1000 and standard MPEG for bitrates higher than 1000 be good enough?
Some custom matrices for all ranges would be great, but remember, standalone compatible.

Now there is an option in the 'hidden options' to enable standalone support. And you can choose between ESS (will restrict bitrate spiking I believe) and MTK/Sigma (this beta uses a new XviD VFW dll packaged for MTK/Sigma chipset support) chipsets. Also looking at another thread here, this beta enables packed bitstream in the AVI and packed bitstream is part of the DXN profile and is more standalone compatible. So what part of AutoGK's standalone unfriendliness would you like to change?Originally posted by iNFO-DVD

Why not? What is wrong with these?

I've done some tests on my mates cello 8105 and it never plays anything with packed bitstreams smootly, though my own ellion does.
There are many threads I've come across about varible audio, not read anything too good about it. My personnal experience is it's a pain. Ever tried putting an AVI with VBR into TMPGEnc or similar programs, watch the sync go bye bye. Is it really worth the hassle? Can you really hear the difference between 128 VBR or CBR?
Lastly, isn't 2CD's for an AVI a little old fasioned???? Look each to their own, I just cant see the point, don't most people use DVDR now? I might be wrong........ Ever tried combining 2 halves of a movie together with VBR.......
Anyway, like I say I'm just trying to do it from a different point of view, I'm sure you'll love it or hate it ;-)

There are many reasons why someone might go for making a tool which is better than an already existing tool, but here I don't see any. AFAICS, there is nothing your tool can do which AutoGK can't.
Reg: Packed bitstream, either you can have packed bitstream or you can't. There is nothing in between. Some standalones (DivX certified mostly) play fine with packed bitstream on, while others (other MPEG-4 players, non-DivX certified mostly) don't. There is no absolute standard here, so you can't say one is better than the other. If AutoGK 2.08b uses packed bitstream and if you don't want it, use <=2.07b.
Reg: VBR, In AutoGK, you can choose whether to have VBR or CBR. If the user choses to have VBR, it maybe for a reason. So what advantage does your tool have when you give the users just VBR?
Reg: Splitting, If you set the target size as 1399 MB or 1401 MB in AutoGK, it won't split the CDs.
I still haven't seen the point of your tool, to be honest.:)

The point is this.....
It's not meant to be 'better' (which is subjective anyway), or the same...... and yes, AutoGK can be set to do most things I want (except force bitrate), but I'm trying to make a program that will ALWAYS be compatible, in other words, can't be set wrong..... Does that make sense?
Anyway, I'll release it and get peoples suggestions and take it from there, people will use it or not.....

Right, I've had to rush it a bit.
Have a mess and give us some feedback.
I've posted it in a new thread, called: 'avi.NET v0.1 BETA'
